Fairlawn Cemetery, north of Chickasha (Grady County), Oklahoma

This relatively new cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Chickasha. It is located on Highway 81 immediately north of the Chickasha Municipal Airport. During World War II, this airport was a basic flying training center for many of our nation's wartime pilots.

The rules and regulations of the cemetery were adopted and approved by the Cemetery Board on September 6, 1950. One of the rules states that no mausoleum or above ground crypts shall ever be erected within the cemetery.

Chickasha's other large cemetery, Rose Hill, south of town, dates back before statehood.

Sixteen Talkingtons to be Buried Here

When Norman Lloyd Talkington died on March 14, 1956, he was the first member of the Sam and Millie Talkington family to pass. His brother Roy Harold Talkington had the foresight to spearhead the purchase of a large family plot that would provide spaces for Sam and Millie, their seven children, and the seven spouses.

In 1956, the total cost of these sixteen lots was only $150.00. Today's prices for the same spaces in this cemetery would be more than $3,200.00

When the last of these seven children and their spouses eventually die and are all buried in this one plot, this fact should make Ripley's Believe It or Not book, because it would be extremely rare for that many members of one immediate family to be buried side by side in one single plot.

Those buried or to be buried in Block 3, Lots 26 and 27 of Fairlawn Cemetery are:
