ANADARKO MEMORIES-Snapshots of Dr. Joe E. Talkington

A tiny tribute to

Dr. Joe Ed Talkington,

Bloomington, Illinois.

Some people call him Joe Ed, some...Joe,
some...Dr. Joe, some Grandpa Joe,
some...Eddie-Wink,......but, his Oklahoma family just call him ED!

This is a post card of the old Chickasha Hospital on West Choctaw street where Ed was born on Sunday, June 21, 1931 to Norman Lloyd and Ethel Zipse Talkington.

"He ain't very heavy....him's my Brother Dale!"

Now you know who first said this famous quotation.
Guess which younger brother stuck the picture about a year later with an ice-pick?

This was an "Okie Swim Party" held in front of the Fred Louis Zipse home in Verden, Okla. The girl's name was Lyle Osborne. The year might have been 1935 or 1936.

Ed's fifth and Dale's third birthday party at the Zipse home. From the left, Lyle Osborne, Cousin Earl Talkington, Ed, Dale and Cousin Joyce Spradley Combs.

Norman, Ethel, Ed and Dale on the north side of the Zipse home.

This picture was taken on November 4, 1936, the day Cousin Robert Fred Hill was born in Okla City to Meredith and Hazel Zipse Hill. Norman, Ethel, Uncle Earl Zipse, Ed and Dale.

This was the same day as above at the Hill home in Okla City with Grandpa Fred Louis Zipse. Notice the older brother's neat hat and freshly pressed clothes....while Dale's hat has been sat upon and the clothes nearly torn from his body by rough playing. The original ODD COUPLE.

This is one of those 25-cent pictures of Ed and Dale from a photo machine in a department store. Maybe the year was 1938 or 1939.

It is not known when or where this beautiful picture was taken.

Five Zipse cousins, from the left, Dorothy Jean Zipse Fitzgerald, Joe Shelby Snider, Jr, Dale, Robert Fred Hill and Ed in front of the Zipse home, about 1938.

Grandmother Frona Mae Roberts Zipse with Ed and Dale in California about 1939.

Easter Sunday of 1939 in the California mountains with Frona and Fred Zipse, Norman, Dale, Ethel and Ed.

Ed and Dale on the front steps of their small home in McFarland, CA about 1939 with Frona and Ethel.

This picture was taken near the Talkington Brothers Service Station in Verden about 1939. At the time Ed was taller than Dale.

This picture was taken in 1939 at the California World's Fair. Notice they are sitting on the arm of a topless stone chick. This work of fine art was part of an outdoor water fountain.

This is Dale on the left in the girl's bathing suit, Cousin Joyce Spradley Combs and Ed in his Jockey-brand underwear. The place was Shannon Springs Park in Chickasha, Okla. The year was maybe 1941 before we could afford regular bathing suits. Apparently they really wanted to swim that day.

In the front swing of their first home in Anadarko, about 1941. Ed, Dale, Cousin Earl Talkington holding Cousin Sammy McComas and Cousin Joyce Spradley Combs.

Ed is on the left, Dale in the middle and Jimmy K. Thompson is on the right at Aunt Pearl and Uncle Shelby Snider's home in Anadarko in 1943.

This studio picture was taken in April of 1944, ages 10 and 12. It was hand-tinted by Aunt Hazel Hill, sister of Ethel and mother of Robert and Alan.

Five cousins: Joe Shelby Snider, Jr, Ed, Dale, Robert Fred Hill and Alan Ray Hill at the old First Christian Church in Anadarko on June 11, 1943 at the Popejoy Music Club's annual recital. (See group picture of that recital at the link listed below.)

Zipse cousins at Shannon Springs Park, Chickasha. From the left, Robert Fred Hill, Ed, Patsy Fitzgerald Blankenship, Dale and Alan Ray Hill.

This was the year Joe Snider was attending Kemper Military Academy in Missouri---because Ed and Dale are wearing Kemper T-shirts.

Ed and Dale get ready to take their singing act on the road with the Anadarko Rodeo Boosters. Ed played the accordion and Dale sang.

Boy Scout Ed and Cub Scout Dale, along with Robert Fred Hill, Alan Ray Hill and Joe Snider at the grave of Garnett Gatewood Zipse, mother of Jean Zipse Fitzgerald and wife of Bud Zipse, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Chickasha, OK.
