Legend

PAGE	Page number referenced in the October, 1941 ORER.
ITEM	Item number on the referenced page. Each line in the ORER is given an item number. Item numbers start from 1 on a page. Item numbers are in ascending order on a given page, but are not always consecutive, that is, some numbers are skipped.
AAR CLASS	Association of American Railroads mechanical designation.
PRR CLASS	Pennsylvania Railroad class. Note: Some line items group more than one class together. For example, H21a & H22a are grouped together on page 199, items 2, 6, and 11. It is impossible to determine the car numbers or the number of cars for the H21a cars and the H22a cars from the information given in these line items.
LOW NUMBER	First number for a line item.
HIGH NUMBER	Last number for a line item.
NUMBER OF CARS	Number of cars for a line item. The number of cars is less than or equal to the possible number of cars between the low number and the high number.
% CAR NUMBERS USED	The given NUMBER OF CARS percentage of the possible number of cars for the car number range. The possible number of cars for an item is the high number - the low number + 1. The actual number of cars is given. For example, page 192, item 24, car numbers range from 135927 to 13982. The possible number of cars is 13982 - 135927 + 1, or 3895. The number of cars given is 3554, 91 % of 3895. This is derived information, not given in the ORER. See note 3.

Notes

1.	Applies to page 192, items 41 and 42. The same number range, 200104 to 219957, is given for class Glc, item 41 and Gla, item 42. The number of cars for these classes is given, but it is impossible to tell which which car numbers were used for Glc cars or Gla cars from the information given. The % of car numbers (14%) reflects both items. There are 19854 possible cars in the number series, and a total of 2876 cars for both items. 2876 is 14% of 19854.
2.	Applies to page 192, items 47 and 51. The same number range, 250001 to 250978, is given for class Gla, item 47 and Glc, item 51. The number of cars for these classes is given, but it is impossible to tell which which car numbers were used for Gla cars or Glc cars from the information given. The percent of car numbers (67%) reflects both items. There are 978 possible cars in the number series, and a total of 654 cars for both items. 654 is 67% of 978.
3.	Percentages of car numbers used does not prove that a certain percentage of a class exists. However, the older classes , Glc, and Gla, consistently show lower percentages of numbers used. This could be due to attrition, but could also be influenced by other factors, such as car renumbering, etc. There is no way of knowing if all numbers in a particular number series were used when the cars were originally built.
