Merlin Aircraft Inc. proudly debuted its newest kitplane at Oshkosh 95.  The new Merlin Explorer is a larger, 4 seat, utility-type kitplane, with a 3000 pound gross weight, and is capable of operating from the shortest strips with tremendous STOL performance.

The prototype shown here (powered by a modified 250 hp Mazda rotary), provides a cruise speed of 115 mph and a climb rate of 1500 fpm.  In keeping with the Merlin tradition of building rugged, dependable aircraft, the Explorer utilizes a fully welded 4130 Chromoly steel airframe.

Production kits will be delivered with a complete fiberglass cabin and fuselage enclosure, and an all-metal quick build wing with extruded aluminum front and rear spars. The aircraft will also feature a 47" wide cabin, with up to 104 gallons fuel capacity. Merlin Aircraft expects that most 4-place Explorer kits will be sold "firewall-back" with builders installing their own powerplants. Any of a wide range of engines (from 180 to 300 hp) are suitable for the 3000 lb. gross weight, four-place Merlin Explorer, including IO360 Lycomings 180 to 200 hp, or many of the new 180 hp or higher automotive conversions.

An introductory price of $19,500 "firewall-back" is available for a limited time. This includes all-metal quick-build wings and fiberglass fuselage enclosure, large tundra tires and rear cargo door. Small deposits are presently being accepted to secure initial production slots.
