DEPECHE MODE REMIX SERVICE & BOOTLEG REMIX INDEX V1.0 by Daniel "The BRAT" Barassi (bratmix@netcom.com) November 21, 1994 This index contains most of the DJ service remixes indexed by service, and whether they were legal remix services, or bootleg services. By definition, remix services are for DJ's. They usually have a clear 32 beat intro, a clear break, and a clear 32 beat outro. This makes it easier for the DJ to spin the song in a club. Some remix services just tack on a new, simple intro & outro. Some services actually put a little more effort into it, adding additional samples, beats, etc. Up until the last year or 2, remix servcies asked the record companies permisiion before doing a remix for their service. This changed when the bigger record companies felt that the promotion gained from these remixes was not necessary, and denied permission to the services. The services that continue to press up product for DJ's are theoretically bootlegging, Basically, if a remix service has done a mix of Mode since World In My Eyes, it's unauthorized by the record companies, and therefore a bootleg. To avoid confusion, I have included the "grey area" services with the legal ones. Also in this index is a small selection of the current Bootleg trend...remix CD compilations. Most of these are done without the Remix Services' permission, often from scratchy vinyl, or poorly recorded tapes. They also have an annoying habit of mis-titling the remix to allure people into buying their CD. I have listed the original track listing (as they appear on the CD's), as well as my corrected track listing. If you, after reading this index, have any questions, feel free to email me at: bratmix@netcom.com Please realise that this list is being done as a service, to prevent people from spending money on inferior Bootleg products, as well as to educate people on where the mixes that they've heard on bootlegs actually originate from. The remixes included in this index are not being offered for sale. With all this said, let's start the index! :) LEGITIMATE REMIX SERVICES _________________________ these will be listed in the following fashion: REMIX SERVICE "song" vinyl catalog #/CD catalog # *comments, if any ALTER MIX "Dangerous" # unknown/not on CD ART OF MIX "Strange Mix Medley" Volume 3/CD1 & CD Chronicles 1 *a medley, using Strangelove's beat (no vocals), with other songs from different artists "Medley 122" Volume 8/CD2 & CD Chronicles 1 *features Strangelove, megamixed with other songs "Dangerous" (Edit Of CD Addiction) Volume 15/CD3 & CD Chronicles 1 "Policy Of Truth" (Memorandum Mix) Volume 20/CD5 DISCO MIX CLUB (D.M.C.) Most of these are just not worth it. Instead, friend a friend who has a mix you want, and just tape it from them. Your tape will sound just as good (I use the word "good" loosely) as their record, and it won't make the bootleggers any wealthier. The same editorial/opinion applies to the following section... Basically, it just fades out I Want You Now before To Have & To Hold starts.) FINAL THOUGHTS ______________ There are a lot of CD's and remixes that I didn't list. I don't have everything. But I will be revising this listing as more material is put out. On the average, for the bootleg CD compilations, most of them are average. The Ultra Rare Tracks series, thugh, is especially terrible. Most of these fade in the tracks, fade out the tracks too early, and otherwise do a poor job on mastering. What do you expect? They are bootlegs! :) For the tracks that say "*source unknown*", this basically means that the mix is done by someone like an amateur DJ, or someone fooling around with record equipment. These don't usually even come close to "real" bootleg remixes, and that is saying a lot!!! :) Your best bet, financially, is to find the record that the bootlegger bootlegged, and buy them. They'll sound much better (usually) than these CD's. Enjoy the index, and, remember, if there are any questions, feel free to email me at: bratmix@netcom.com Daniel "The BRAT" Barassi
