Cocktail Arcade Project
Page
1: The Beginning
April 09, 2004
While
surfing the local listings on ebay
I came across a Midway Rally-X cocktail cabinet. I decided that it would
become my next project.
As I write this I have yet to pick up the cabinet, I will
be getting it tomorrow. As with most of my recent hobbies I decided
to chronicle my experiences on the web. I figure it's only fair since
I get just about all my arcade information off the web.
I will be updating this page with information and pictures
as I work on the cabinet. I have built a MAME cabinet from scratch,
restored a Tempest - and now I will embark on my first cocktail cabinet.

Here
are the pictures of the cabinet from the ebay ad. |

You
can see that the Rally-X cabinet looks a lot like a Pac Man, with
a single coin slot. |

Here
are the controls, why it was designed with the button to the left
of the joystick is beyond me. |
 |
This
shot shows that the monitor is mounted horizontally, unlike the
more common Pac Man, Ms. Pac Man and Galaga cabinets. |

OK, now that I have bought a cabinet, what's next? I need
to figure out what I am going to do with it. I know I'll get blasted
from collectors, but I am planning on converting this cabinet into a
vertical MAME machine. Now you may ask why buy a complete working game
and not build one or buy a kit, so here is my reasoning:
1) The Arcadedepot
kit costs around $300 shipped to your door with no stain or sealer applied.
The Mantis
Amusements kit costs $400 plus shipping. Neither one of these cabinets
come with control panels, controls, coin door, white plexi, etc.. I
figure that what I paid for my cabinet was a little high, but I got
a complete cabinet.
2) I can actually enjoy the cabinet as-is until I get some more money
to convert it.
3) I can sell some of the original parts to defray some of the purchase
price.
That about wraps up the first installment of my latest
project.
