Cocktail Arcade Project

Page 2: Strip, Modify and Plan
April - May, 2004

I have begun gutting the cabinet - the horror... the horror... Yes, I know I could be lynched by collectors for doing this. I played the game enough times to know I didn't care for it, and I was able to sell the game board to someone who needed it to get his Rally-X up and running. The cabinet is serial number 932, so I don't think it qualifies as extremely rare.

I will be wiring this cabinet up with a PC, I-Pac, ArcadeVGA video card and an arcade monitor. I plan to run MAME with only games that use a vertical monitor, and 1 or no buttons. That way I don't have to modify the existing controls other than to swap the position of the joystick and button, which are currently reversed from most games.

I'm going to try using these plastic furniture sliders. They were cheaper than buying new feet, so I'll see how they work out.
Everything but the control panels, coin door and fan have been removed. The cabinet has been thoroughly cleaned also.
I have resized the monitor opening to match Kyle Lindstroms Ms. Pac Man plans.
Rather than use the 19" GO7 that was in the cabinet, I have decided to buy a new monitor. The GO7 has some Rally-X burn in, and an area of the screen has a blue haze to it. I bought a 19" Vision Pro from Happs on sale for $155 plus shipping.

The joysticks that came with the cabinet won't swap to the left hand side without either enlarging the holes in the control panel, or cutting the joystick mounting brackets. I have sold the sticks on ebay, and ordered Ms Pac-Man/Galaga reunion sticks. I got enough for the old sticks to pay for the new ones:)

The reunion sticks use microswitches instead of leaf switches, but I can live with that. They will fit on the left side of the control panel with no modifications other than drilling new mounting holes.

I found a hi-res Galaxian cocktail control panel overlay image online, and I have modified it to work with my control panels. I will get it printed on adhesive vinyl. I will also get a Galaxian cocktail underlay to complete the graphics package.
