Page 3: Marquee Reconstruction
February, 2004

This will be my first of two patch projects, the other being the control panel.

Why am I going to fix a cut up marquee panel? I think it will be fun to try, and if I mess it up it isn't like I've lost anything. Also if I succeed I have kept one more part available for someone else who may need it more than I do.

Here is a reference picture. Apart from it having Major Havoc art this is what the marquee should look like. I notice in the front pic that the grille seems to be a generic round perferated sheet like you find on a lot of common speaker grilles.

I notice in the back pic that there is what appears to be cardboard covering the speaker grille. I am guessing that is to prevent light from shining through the grille.

Here is my marquee. It's not too visible in this picture, but there are actually two recessed areas. One is for the backglass and one is for the speaker grille. They sit in recessed channels so that when the overlay is on the whole thing appears flush.

Obviously you can see that there was a section cut out on the left. This section supported the speaker grille. I can also see that the recessed channel for the grille is not as deep as for the backglass, meaning that the grille material is thinner.

Here is the replacement T section I made. I used some brass hardware to connect it to the marquee. I just made a template from where the stubs of the original T were.

I used my Dremel router to route the front to 2 different depths. The glass insert is about 3/16 deep, but the grille secton is only about 1/16. The dremel isn't the most precise tool, so I need to spend a little more time getting the front just right.

Here is the marquee, ready for a little sanding and some finishing touches to the T section.

Well, a big thanks to Brad for selling me the contents of a water damaged Tempest! This is going to change my plans a little. I took the damaged marquee that I got from Brad (peeling marquee, swolen and warped wood) and removed the glass and speaker grille. I then installed them in my rebuilt marquee panel.

I now have a clean, ready for paint marquee! Everything fits perfectly in it. Now all I need is to paint it black and buy/install repro marquee art to end up with a beautiful marquee!

Here is a shot of the marquee, painted and ready for a new overlay (I removed the glass and grill for the picture). I have purchased an overlay from arcadeshop, and it is due today! Now I just have to hope that I don't mess it up when sticking it on!
And now we have a finished marquee! Two damaged cabinets have produced one beautiful marquee.

Consider this project done! The end result turned out great. I don't think it would have been nearly as nice if I didn't get that second marquee to steal parts from. Thanks agian Brad!
