Vapor Trail MAME

I made this cabinet for a friend at work. The idea was to make a cabinet with the spare parts I had lying around to keep the cost down.

It turned out really nice. I think part of that was due to the great empty cabinet I got from a local collector. Although I say empty, it was pretty much complete apart from the monitor, coin door and PC.

Total cost of this cabinet was just over $300.00 - and that includes $20 for replacement side art!

Here's the back of the cabinet. If you look closely you can see where I cut off a section of the monitor frame so the back door would fit on.

This shot is without the PC, it is a mid tower case that just fits standing up in the bottom of the cab.

One nice thing about this cabinet is that the control panel is attached to a tray that pulls out.

I mounted the keyboard encoder on the control panel tray, and made a quick "mouse holster" out of a small piece of aluminum.

the transformer, line filter and fuses came with the cabinet.

I wired 12 volts to the coin door to power the lights. The lights came from an auto parts store. You can also see where I did a little hacking to the original test panel.

I mounted the controls from a set of PC speakers to the back of the plate, and drilled a hole for the volume knob. I also added a small bracket with the power switch.

To start the machine you flip the power switch (the one on top of the coin box), then it automatically boots up into Win98 and starts cocktailfe as a front end. To shutdown you press the black button on the larger bracket which is mapped to escape. Pressing that button exits the front end and shuts down Windows, then just flip the power switch again to cut all power to the cabinet.

The artwork on the cabinet was missing on one side, and damaged on the other. I bought a set of original replacement art off ebay.
