What do my clients and students say about my work?

They're quite complimentary. (Pay no attention to the writer blushing behind that curtain.) Here's the types of work I've done for them; samples are here.

Their kind words are right here:

Benjamin was a delight to work with. When I hired Benjamin to flesh out a complete draft of the Bureau's Plan to Address Racial Profiling, I had an outline and lots of ideas about where I wanted it to go. In just a couple of meetings with me, he was able to create a clear, concise 36-page document complete with a "business case" for addressing racial profiling, overview of the data, concrete action steps with timelines. Benjamin helped me focus and provide clarity on a topic of great sensitivity. I was proud to be able to present the finished document to the community.

Benjamin delivers. He listens, he’s a quick study, and he produces well-crafted documents tailored to their audience. Not only that, but he’s also fun to work with.

I was impressed by the work Benjamin did for the Portland Police Bureau on its plan to address racial profiling: it was so clear! Then, when I needed to have someone write a summary report for the City Council on the meetings of the Racial Profiling Committee in 2008, I hired him. He was thorough, on time, and his work was excellent. I'm grateful for his hard work. His style is accessible – even when describing complex issues and policies. He communicates on a level we can all understand.

We found out about a huge federal grant at the last minute and called Benjamin. To write the grant, he digested a monstrous amount of critical-but-arcane research and networked with people in our agency, at one of our subcontractors, and with people from two other county juvenile justice agencies. Our thirty-page grant—complete with helpful graphics—was finished in 18 days. Every comma was in the right place. Darn Write is darn fast!

I hired Benjamin to write two Policies and Procedures manuals for the Multnomah County STOP [adult drug] Court. Capturing and condensing an entire court program on paper was a unique challenge, but the Partners’ Manual he wrote provides an excellent overview of the history of STOP Court, how it operates, and the specific roles and responsibilities of each of the primary professionals involved in daily operations. The Participant’s Manual is comprehensive and explains clients’ roles, responsibilities, and functions of the court and treatment in language that is easy to understand. It will serve as an excellent adjunct to the messages that are provided by the court, the defense attorney, and the treatment organization. I am very pleased with the products Benjamin produced.

I hired Benjamin to jump-start our fundraising program, and he did. His direct mail letters brought in many lapsed members, increased the average donation, and made a significant difference to our bottom line.

When I hired Benjamin to translate a dry, unconvincing grant proposal into a letter that people would actually read, he really "got it." He worked quickly and gave us a winner.

I can't wait to get going on your suggestions for revising my memoir. You are an amazing reader and critic.  The idea to interview the bankruptcy judge blew me away.

At age 43 I enrolled in a short story writing course taught by Benjamin Chambers, hoping to brush up on my craft. For the next seven years, he read every word I wrote and pointed out where I'd gone wrong--on plotting, on dialog, on characterization, on story logic--you name it, I learned from every marginal note.  I sold my first novel to Avon Books in 1996. I would not have succeeded without Benjamin's insights, patience, craftsmanship, and understanding of what it takes to create a damn good read.

Benjamin Chambers is a Natural Born Writing Teacher - wise, coherent and funny. It wasn't until I took his class on plotting a mystery that I finally understood how to structure a ripping good story.

Benjamin wrote a perfect introduction to our anthology. He’s a beautiful writer. We honestly couldn’t have asked for or imagined a better or more fitting intro.

I've taken writing classes in a variety of settings, including a graduate-level university program; Benjamin's course on structure in the novel and short story was the best. Although I've always been a voracious reader, I didn't really understand what a short story was, or the scope a novel could have, until I studied with Benjamin. The readings and lessons he used were incredibly helpful and practical. I also got lots of encouragement and honest, thoughtful critiques.

He made me a better writer and even a better reader.
