An email from Wirt Atmar to the Astronomical Society of Las Cruces - 9/26/04

------------------------------------------------------

For just about a year now, we've been recording the monthly talks at the ASLC meetings so that they could be later put up on the internet.  You can see the webpage describing the talks at:

http://aics-research.com/lectures/aslcnm/

Many of the talks are now active. To view the talks, you will need to download a Windows-only player we've been developing over the last several years, QCShow. You can download the QCShow installer from:

http://aics-research.com/qcshow/

Once successfully installed, all you need do is click on one of the hyperlinks in the webpage above to watch the selected talk.

The following keys are active in the player:
ARROW KEYS, HOME, END, PAGE UP/DOWN = advance or retard the slide
SPACE BAR, ENTER, PAUSE = toggle a pause in play
ESC = quits the player
LETTER "I" KEY = toggles an informational display

At the bottom of the page, you'll find Dave Dockery's talk from just this last Friday night, thus this talk will be fresh in everyone's memory so that for those of you who were there can readily compare the experience of the live talk compared to the "canned" Dave.

Dave's talk ran 69 minutes. The internet version runs only 33 minutes. The time differences are due to Dave's demonstrations of his various software packages. Those demos consumed 20-25 minutes by themselves, but were cut out of the internet version. Similarly, there was a great deal of audience participation in Friday night's talk, but the audience comments were too weak and mumbly to be understood, so most of those sections were deleted as well.

Nevertheless, that which remains seems quite informative and tightly constructed to me (but then again, I'm the person who did the editing). Very few people have yet downloaded the player or seen any of the various lecture series that we've been recording. Should you find anything not working, confusing or not to your liking, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

The player should run on any 32-bit version of Windows.
