Queer theory is the academic approach to discuss how identity is formed and how those not within the sexual majority behave within the confines of a marginalized group. My work questions how identity is placed upon gay men and their reactions to this often socially stigmatized counter-culture. I explore personal experiences as well as experiences that fall within the inherent scope of living as a gay man. In many ways, my work tends to discuss the underbelly and often-unattractive aspects of the gay world. I approach and create work in many ways, but I often use humor and/or personal situations to work as a gateway to larger and more serious issues or perspectives that affect me. I create work that is, at its core, influenced by my experiences within the gay community but often speaks in a more universal way as a means to draw comparisons to the rest of society. |
