Roger Stephenson
(circa 1972)

Roger Stephenson was a guitarist, bassist, vocalist and a good friend. Roger played in numerous bands throughout the 1970's. I had the good fortune to play in a couple of bands with him in 1971-72. This photo was taken in 1972 at the Burningtree Country Club in Decatur, AL. Roger added bass guitar to my many of the songs on the "Unfamiliar to Radio" CD.

Update 2002 Roger works for the Ametek Corporation located in Decatur, AL.  Roger originally played bass guitar with "Blues Rox" but had to give it up due to the "time factor".

Brian Hewitt
(circa 1971)

I can't remember exactly how or when I first met Brian. It was around 1971. I think at that time Brian was about 15-16 years old.  Brian was the drummer for the band "Stoppe" which had recorded a single 45 "She took me down" that got local air play. I played in several bands with Brian performing at the local skating ring and high schools. Brian was always eager to record and played drums on many of the "Unfamiliar to Radio" songs. I can still remember all of those road trips. Thanks Brian for your friendship, talent and enthusiasm.

Last Update 2007:  I've talked to Brian many times since the CD was completed. It's been fun to pass on to Brian many of the other songs from (Volume 1&3) along with alternate cuts, out takes & recorded comments. Brian has been performing off and on throughout the years, Decatur, AL is still home.

"Hook" Tom Hooker

I met the "Hook" while he was still in High School. He was one hell of a bass guitar player. Tom enjoyed recording music and would always show up to my no pay recording sessions. In Muscle Shoals, Alabama Tom and I rented a house together while attending the University of North Alabama. We had the original animal house. Tom played in many bands and gigged all over southeast and beyond. Hook, thanks for the friendship, and the inspiration.

Update 2007:  I snagged this photo of Hook from the bio page of the Flashbacks. Checkout the Flashbacks and sample the music at  www.flashbacksband.com

Bill Thomson
(circa 1971)

Bill Thomson was a seasoned guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. He was the guitarist and vocalist in the band "Trilogy" (with Bob O'Shields & Owen Brown). "Trilogy" already had a recording contract with Widget Studios in Muscle Shoals so Bill already had a lot of hours in the recording studio. I can still remember the time "Trilogy" opened for the Allman Brothers Band at J.C. Calhoun Jr. College (see photo)...they were great.  Bill played lead and slide guitars on the song "Unfamiliar to Radio"  and a lead break on "Time for some Good News". Bill also performed a lead guitar through a vocal tube unit on "Say, I just got to say".

Update 2001:  Bill Thomson is currently a partner in an architectural firm in Huntsville. Bill also plays lead guitar, harmonica and sings vocals in the band "Blues Rox". Bill sent me a copy of their recent CD "Searching for the Groove" and it's fantastic.

Update 2009:  Bill Thomson and Bob O'Sheilds are still performing in a new band as Group6.

Bob O'Shields
(circa 1971)

Bob O'Shields
(Blues Rox - Big Springs Jam 2001)

Bob O'Shields was a legendary drummer and vocalist. Bob was the drummer in the band the "Changin' Tymes" (late 1960's). The "Tymes" were regionally known an had a 45 single "Bye Tyme" that received considerable air play. Bob later was in the band "Trilogy"  and had recorded extensively in Widget Studios (Muscle Shoals, AL). Bob played drums and percussion on "Say I just got to say" and on several other demo's not included in Volume 2.

Update 2001:  Bob O'Sheilds and Bill Thomson are now members of the band "Blues Rox". Bob sings lead vocals and plays keyboard. Bob wrote and/or co-wrote many of the songs on their CD "Searching for the Groove". The photo's of Bob were provided by Bill Thomson.

Update 2009:  Bob O'Sheilds and Bill Thomson are still performing in a new band as   Group6.

Larry Chandler
(circa 1975)

Larry played drums on the song "Unfamiliar to Radio". He was unfortunate to show up one night with Roger Stephenson and willingly helped out with the recording.  Larry was a drummer extraordinaire in a number of regional bands.  Larry was also an advertising artist specializing in large scale art work. Larry was a full time artist working with the Franklin Mint, Hadley House Publishing, Moriah Publishing, and Ducks Unlimited. You can view Larry's excellent work at: www.larrychandlerart.com   www.labradorstuff.com

Last Update 2007:  Larry passed away March 17, 2007.  Better known and recognized for his wildlife artwork, I will always remember Larry the musician & drummer from the days of my youth. You will be missed by many my friend.

Lee Prestwood
(No Photo available)

Lee was a gifted songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, occasional piano player and a good friend. We spent many hours discussing the art of songwriting. Lee added the piano on "Suite 21". Besides helping me to record my material Lee recorded several of his own songs  "I swear it on my own" and "Sanity".   Lee also recorded guitars and vocals on other demos not included in Volume 2.

Connie Prater Faulkner
(No Photo available)

Connie Prater overdubbed the background vocals on "Ever since I was three". Connie had a wonderful voice and I'm glad she took the time to lend her vocal talent to one on my songs. Thanks Connie and best wishes to you and your family.

Tim McDaniel
(No Photo available)

I met Tim through Tom Hooker or Roger Stephenson (the best that I can recall). Tim had the difficult task of overdubbing the drums on the song "Writer night lover day". Tim at that time was only 14 maybe 15 years old.  But he was enthusiastic and ready to record. Tim is the only "Unfamiliar" musician that I've not been able to locate. It's been a long time though. I've not been able to locate Tim. Any information, anyone?

Final Notes: September 2009

The unfamiliar musicians status has evolved since this site was first created in 2001. I've managed to add a few updates, as the info came in through emails, so there you have it,  David September 2009.
