Maybe you didn't get out of Trona quite soon enough ! (Oh, now I can tell, they aren't padded. Maybe that answers how you got out of Trona. Is your current rent paid by the Federal government?) Seriously, I love history, and I loved living in Trona. I had the privilege to be involved with the Historical Society while I lived there. Thanks for the website on Trona. |

Estill Lawrence Website: Wendy's Genealogy Homepage Referred by: From Twin Cities MIDI From: live in Connersville, Indiana Time: Dec 3, 1998 15:59 Comments: Hi David, Really love the page on Trona, I lived their in 1962, left for a couple of years, then returned in November 1964, and graduated from there in 1965, however if you ever see a 1965 yearbook, the only picture of me is my baby picture, I didn't even rate a caricature and initials (boo-hoo! tehe!). My stepfather was John Weise Walker and he worked twice for American Potash and Chemical Co. The last time from late 1961 till probably 1973/1974. He and my mom then moved in with my sis (class of 1963), where John passed away Nov. 15, 1974. My sis and mother now live in Ft. Worth, Tx. John was a maintenance machnist, he is buried in the Trona Cemetery. I really enjoyed the Classic 60's Reunion, it was a blast. I was not accepted very well when I went to HS., but it was not that way when I went to the reunion, it felt great to feel accepted. I thought everyone looked just great!! Guess now that I came back home (to Trona), I'll have to put a link from my homepage, and when I get a scanner, I will add pictures of the Reunion. Hey guys, let's do it again!!!!! Love to all. (Ernie) Website: Referred by: Net Search From: Time: Dec 29, 1998 14:29 Comments: Hi David, It is nice to see Trona well represented on the web. In the last few years there has been a lot of additions. I found you while looking for Glenn Stevens(THS:1957 )from Westend. He had a brother, Malvern(THS: 1953/4). Glenn apparently prospected (or retreated) into a ranch somewhere near the radar station on Rte 395 between Atolia and Four Corners (Cramer Crossing). But that was 15-18 years ago. No word since. I am a Westend desert rat, born 1940, graduated Trona High in 1957, went one year to CalPoly, San Luis Obispo, and then 20 years in the Army Signal Corps. Since then I've spent 20 years with MITRE Corporation. I'm currently living in New Hampshire - southern New Hampshire. Our weather is quite a bit more mild than yours. Didn't have much to say but you said "Shock me" so shocked be you. Ernie |

I worked a few years with your dad in borax. I knew him well and liked him a lot. He was "frozen" in the dryer tenders job and trained me in the task. Of course I was only a child. I enjoy the yearbook pages most of all. If you could get more years of those it would be great! Thanks again Glen |

Prendergast Website: Referred by: From Trona on the Web From: Time: Jan 31, 1999 18:45 Comments: Dear David Stevens, I wanted to thank you for the wonderful Trona homepage. It has brought tears to my eyes, as I lived there as a child--from 1946 to 1958 (with a 1-year gap in the late 40s). I'm not ready to post anything on the web site yet. I now live in New Jersey. Maybe 5 years ago I returned to Trona for the first time in about 30 years, when my aunt Eleanor Rockdale, who is living in Ridgecrest, drove me around town faster than I wanted to go. So much has disappeared--it is a shock. It was so wonderful to see the old pictures on your site and remember the old theater, ceiling open to the stars, and the beery smell emanating from the pool hall in Austin Hall. It is going to take me some time to adjust to the middle-aged state of all of the people I remember as young teens--including me. I feel like I'm twelve, but if we had stayed in Trona I would have been in the HS class of 1960. I'd rather remember Billy Ray as a good-looking pesty boy across the street--how did he get to have gray hair? Eddie Semansky's hair looks dark in the photo--I want to remember him with the blonde hair he had as a kid. So I prefer to lurk for a while. I'll tell my Dad to send some memories to the web site. Many, many thanks for doing this. |

It's quite a coincidence, I was born in Minn and lived in Trona (62 thru 66) and worked at West End and at the Trona Plant. Small world! I reached you VIA my searching for info on Seldom Seen Slim and Ballarat Bob. What ever happened to Bob? Both those guys used to come into the bar we had in Argus. The Bonanza. My better halfs name is Penny. We were also on the West End Bowling League, at the old bowling alley with the two legged pin setters. We had six kids, two of which attended school there. Tell me more about your life in Trona and when you left there. |

Sunday cruising on the Net, particularly for mid.files and sites. I am the only one with a Mac, chums have PCs so I have to show the flag! I do have a http: site, but cannot recall the name or URL at the moment. It has been needing an idea to resolve for me, what am I going to do with it? Having seen your site; good layout! Simple but effective. It started me to thinking of some theme, which may just make for a solution. I am into 'communication' but lack for, and don't want technical stuff unless it helps me make better tracks on the web. Greetings from Edinburgh/Scotland; I like jazz, am retired and sorting ot the aches and twinges to allow me to finally walk for miles, or as near to that distance as possible. (Shafer) McGill Website: Referred by: From Twin Cities MIDI From: Time: Jun 30, 1999 01:17 Comments: Hi, Found a link to your page on one of the Trona sites. My family lived in Trona beginning in 1951. We lived in a little camp trailer in a trailer park that used to be in Argus, then moved to a railroad house on Alameda Street, then to Pioneer Point. My sister and I graduated from Trona Hi. Dad worked for the railroad and Mom was a secretary in plant maintenance. I can remember playing with "Trona Money" which they used to coin for the plant until the IRS said it was a no-no. When Dad retired, he was assistant Train Master, but he started as a conductor. Mom would take us to the train in our P.J.s and let us ride with Dad up to Searles Station in the caboose. She would met us and take us back home to bed. It was our big adventure. I once took a friend home for a visit with my folks and she started laughing when we rounded the corner into town. The road got bumpy, the sign said "the end" (they were referring to the county maintained road) and she got a big wiff of rotten eggs. When she finally stopped laughing, she said "Judi, this is the worse place I've ever been, and I've been to Calcutta" She was probably right, but you know, the desert has it's own beauty and one thing is for sure, we had a safe place to be little kids in. I've been having a lot of fun with the Trona sites and yours was one of the links I looked at. I just couldn't resist responding to your invitation for anyone from Trona to write. Best Wishes, Judi McGill |

I think the Trona hospital must have been closed. (My younger sister was born at the Trona hospital 18 months later.) But I lived my first 17 years in Trona. Both my parents are buried in Trona as are both sets of my grandparents. My Dad was Leroy Powers (he worked at the West End Plant for over 40 years) and his parents were Sidney and Ruth Powers. My mother was Ila Powers (Worman) and her parents were Esau (he worked at the Trona AP&C for 40 years) and Lois Worman. My uncle owned and operated the Chevron gas station in Trona. I still have relatives in Trona and Ridgecrest. I graduated from Trona High School in 1969, married a young man from the Navy Base in China Lake and this August, we will celebrate our 30th anniversary (He was from Oregon and we have made our home there ever since.) I was in Trona last September. It is sad and quite depressing to go back. The town is really suffering. I had a wonderful life growing up in Trona, but I would never be able to live there now....... It has been fun to read up on Trona. Enjoyed your web page..... |
