Dynahoe Final Drive
I dissasembled the right side final drive to get to the brakes, which don't
seem to stop as well as they should.
Brake shoes good. Dry. One retainer clip missing,
and return spring broken. Note wear on the end of the axle
and the end of the fixed shaft.
The 2 tabs on the thrust washer (center) were grinding
into the end of the fixed shaft. The source of the metal
chips and powder on the drain plug magnet!
The gear to the right is the sun gear, driven by the axle,
from the differential.
The sun gear drives the planet gears. The planet gears
and their carrier revolve around the sun gear. The
carrier drives the housing, turning the wheel.
The gears are all in very good condition.
The stationary ring gear.
The oil seal and inner bearing. The bearings are
not in great condition, but I've seen worse.
The final drive housing. For some reason, there is no
provision for driving the race out, so I made a puller.
Not shown is a 1/2" bolt & coupling nut used to wedge
the hook against the race.
The tool was made from a thin 1/2" unistrut nut.
