Subaru Loyale / GL / DL trailer hitch

I know, a 2" receiver is overkill for a Loyale. But they are common as dirt. When not using the hitch, it is removable and you don't walk into it.

All metal parts are straight cut pieces. The 2 pieces of angle iron are 1-1/2 x 2-1/2 x 3/16" thick. The channel is 4" wide.
There are 3 spacer blocks:
4 x 1-1/2 x 5/16 between the channel and the back angle iron.
2) 1/2" bolts tie the channel to the rear angle iron through this block.

4 x 1 x 1/2 between the channel and the car bottom.
2) 3/8" bolts tie the channel to the inner 1 x 1 angle iron through this block.

4 x 1 x 5/16 between the channel and the front angle iron.
4) 3/8" bolts tie the channel to the front angle iron and the inner 1 x 1 iron through the block.

The bolts grade 5 or 8. I welded the spacer blocks to the angle irons. The front angle iron is mostly there because I figured if I was rear ended, it would help protect the gas tank.

Inside the flip up door at the back. The 2 small angle irons are 1 x 1 x 1/8. I used a 1" hole saw to cut access holes in the sheet metal so that I could put nuts on the bolts that hold the rear angle iron on. The nuts I used have flanges with lucking teeth formed into them, so it only takes finger pressure to get them to start to tighten. There are also 4 bolts that just hold the channel to the sheetmetal pan.

Assembly / installation:
I drilled the angle irons first. Remove the bumper. Mark the center of the car. Mount the rear angle iron first. Loosly install the channel & rear spacer block with hte 2 1/2" bolts. Square it up. Install the 4 pan bolts. Now the middle block and the front angle & block can be clamped in place by the previously installed bolts. Check that the channel is square to the rear angle. Drill the rest of the holes, install the bolts as you go.
