Luxeon K2 Theater LEDs

These are Luxeon K2 LEDs. Red @ 350mA, all others at 1Amp. That's about 4Watts for the colors other than red. The lighting in the room is about normal indoor level. It is tricky to get a picture to show how bright these are. The red looks brighter due to the camera. The housing temperature rises to about 100 degrees F after many hours of operation at room temperature. The housings are made from 1/8" wall, 2" square aluminum tube.

The LED is soldered to the small copper dot, which is soldered to the 1" x 1-1/4" copper plate. To assemble, I use a couple of 4-40 screws & nuts to hold the PCB to the copper plate. Place this on a small aluminum L for easier handling. Place the L with the plate& PCB onto a heat source at soldering temperature. Melt some solder in the center, drop the copper dot into place. Melt some solder on top of the dot. Place the K2 emitter. Lift the L off the heat source, careful not to disturb the parts. This sequence must be done quickly to avoid overheating the LED. While the assembly is cooling, I solder the LED's electrical leads to the PCB. Once the whole thing is cool, remove the screws, add the OPK2-1 lens. These have a 3 degree beam, and add on diffusers for 6, 12 and oval.

The LED assembly is mounted on a piece of 1/8" thick aluminum L with a thermal pad for electrical insulation. The L is mounted to the inside of the aluminum tube with screws and heatsink grease.
