Elsie grew up in mill towns in northwest Wisconsin with six brothers.12 In the 1890s, she and the rest of her family fled a disastrous forest fire by jumping into a nearby lake.13 She was listed in the household of William Dorn in the 1900 Census at Lake Nebagamon, Douglas Co., WI.14 She was employed at Bruce, WI, as an elementary school teacher in 1910.15 In 1912 she moved to Montana with her parents where they built a farm. She homesteaded land and taught school. After marriage, she and her husband farmed near Wagner, Montana for five years.16 During World War II, Elsie resumed her teaching career to help with the labor shortage and she continued after the war until she retired.17
