This is a media storage cabinet I built for a customer. It's made from red oak and poplar. The top drawer is divided into sections for storing 78 audio cassette tapes. Inside the cabinet there are 5 drawers. The top one stores 112 audio CDs. The other four store a total of 120 VHS video cassette tapes. The customer had specific storage needs as well as dimensions for the cabinet. The tricky part was trying to fit as much storage in the space allotted. After drawing a set of working plans, I went back to get final approval only to find out she had changed her mind on the overall height of the cabinet. Things were pretty tight already in a design that met her storage needs and now I had to reduce the height by four inches. Back to the drawing board I went. After a little work on the measurements, I came up with a plan that worked. Half inch poplar was used for the drawer boxes. I used Blum epoxy coated 3/4 extension slides and one set of Accuride full extension slides on the drawers. To match an existing entertainment center, I used Zar Spanish Oak stain and finished it with several coats of Minwax polyurethane. The cabinet measures 42 inches tall by 30 inches wide by 12 1/4 inches deep. |
