Another Antique Oak Wardrobe
Repairs
I injected liquid hide glue into the splits in the
panel and pulled them together using blue painter's tape to act as a clamp until
dry. I also used hide glue to attach the broken center rail piece. It's the long
piece of tape to the right.
This leg had come off and needed to be glued back.
Here you see some clamps holding it in place while the hide glue dried. The
socket, which holds the caster stem, was loose and kept falling out due to the
hole it inserts into being elongated. I cut some slivers of oak and placed them
along with some glue in the hole. The socket fit snug after tapping it back in.
This rear panel had a piece of the tongue broken off.
The broken piece is glued back on and held until dry using painter's tape.
This shot also shows the condition of the finish, which was the same for both panels.
After the repair on the tongue dried, I wiped the inside surfaces with an
alcohol based dye of the same color and applied a coat of shellac.
The drawers pictured here are completed. I had to make some repairs to one of them that had some splits in a side and the bottom. I also removed a shellac run from the front of one drawer and gave the insides a fresh coat of shellac to seal in any musty odor.
