The Cabinet Cases

This page shows some of the work involved in repairing the two case carcasses of the wardrobe. Both wobbled and needed to be tightened to become stable again.

Below is a list of thumbnail photos. By clicking on a thumbnail you will see close up photos of some of the details in this project. Use the "Back" button on your browser to return to this page.

case_back1.jpg (11375 bytes) The cabinets were shaky due to the rear horizontal frame rails loosening over time. The thin panels were also loose within the frames. To repair this, I used hide glue in the frame's joints and also glued the loose plywood panels in their grooves.
case_back2.jpg (19868 bytes) Once the hide glue set up, I removed the clamps and the cases were rigid once again.
case_split1.jpg (11566 bytes) This case had an interior frame member that was split and was missing part of the wood. I repaired it by using hide glue to hold the remaining pieces. The tape is there to act as a clamp until the glue dried.
case_split2.jpg (10123 bytes) Next, I filled the voids with a wood putty and sanded it smooth once it dried.
case_split3.jpg (9983 bytes) Next step - staining the repaired area to match.
case_split4.jpg (21290 bytes) Finally, the interior of both cases were cleaned, a stain was applied, and a coat of polyurethane finished it off.
