The Center Panel

The old center panel was just a piece of 1/4 inch veneered plywood. The client wanted something with a little more pizzazz. After visiting Hearne Hardwoods Website and seeing some English brown oak that looked like it would match up real nice, I gave them a call. I talked to Gary Hearne and found out the wood in this wardrobe was most likely English brown oak since it had been made in Wales. I told him what I needed and he picked out a nice piece of 5/4 quartersawn English brown oak to ship.

I was able to slice it into three pieces to make the new center panel. If this new panel didn't catch my client's eye, nothing would!

center_panel_old.jpg (19272 bytes) Here's the old center panel.
center_panel1.jpg (15269 bytes) The quartersawn English brown oak is ready to take to the bandsaw to slice into three pieces. This lumber cost $15 per board foot, so I couldn't afford to make a mistake!
center_panel2.jpg (13769 bytes) The three pieces have been run through the planer and been edge jointed. Now they're ready to be glued up.
center_panel3.jpg (14705 bytes) Here they are glued and in the clamps to dry. Afterwards I'll smooth the glue joints with a cabinet scraper and cut the panel to final size.
center_panel4.jpg (15422 bytes) This is the finished panel resting in the frame. I used some plastic clips on the back side to hold the panel in the frame and allow for wood movement.
