In August, I took a sponsor trip with Compassion International to Brazil to meet the girl I sponsor, Amanda. While I was there, I really saw what poverty is like throughout the world. Millions upon millions of children receive less food each day than the average American has for one meal. Their homes have no doors or windows, just holes in the walls. Many families have only two rooms in their entire home, no matter how many children are in it. Many children never receive an opportunity for any kind of schooling. Thousands of children die each day from preventable causes. Those who survive get the message that they must not matter.
Sponsoring a child through Compassion International changes all that. When you sponsor a child for $28 each month, that child will get the opportunity to be educated, will have access to health care, and will receive the food and water he or she needs to grow. Most importantly, the Compassion workers with the child will let them know that Jesus loves them, and that they do matter. You will also get the chance to tell your child that you love him or her, because sponsors may write to their children as often as they wish. The child will let you know the impact you are having in the three letters the child writes each year.

Just come and pick up my corpse, says imprisoned pastor
Pastor
Gong Shengliang, the imprisoned leader of the South China Church, told
relatives during a prison visit Monday that he fears for his life in Hongshan
Prison, Wuhan City, Hubei Province.
If
you are able in any way, please transfer me to another prison, Gong begged his
three sisters during a 10-minute visit on Monday. Otherwise, just come and pick
up my corpse. VOM sources said that Gong had to be carried into the visiting
hall at the prison by four other inmates, as he could not walk. When one of the
sisters pressed the guard for an explanation of Gong's injuries, the guard said
that the pastor fell while he was washing windows in the prison. According to
the guard, Gong was washing the inside of the windows, yet somehow fell outside
the building.
Gong
is accompanied everywhere he goes inside the prison by two guards, making the
report of a fall out of a window even more incredible.
When
Gong was asked about the injury, he first looked at the guard and then said
reluctantly, Yes, I fell.
The
sisters were only allowed 10 minutes with Gong, and were separated by two panes
of glass and forced to talk via a telephone.
When
asked why he had stopped writing letters to those outside of prison, Gong said,
I don't have the strength to write. When I pick up my pen, there are lots of
troubles. When one of Gong's sisters complained of his injuries to the prison
director, Sun Wenquan, she was told that Gong is a model prisoner in every
respect except one: he refuses to denounce his faith in Christ, and he will not
stop praying and preaching.
He
is so into the Bible that he has lost touch with reality, the sisters were
told.
The
Voice of the Martyrs urges Christians to write to the Chinese government on
Gong's behalf, requesting a transfer of prisons.
The
man in charge of the prison says this is a model prisoner, said Todd Nettleton,
a spokesman for Voice Of The Martyrs. Yet he has already spent 411 days (as of
April 13, 2004) with his arms and legs chained. Without God's help, this
innocent man is not likely to survive many more weeks in Hongshan Prison.

Your prayers are welcome here in our household. Our road hasn’t
been plowed, so we’re not getting anywhere soon, but the larger issue for me
today is that I’m quarantined with Celia. She was up vomiting all night long,
from 11:30 p.m. until about 6:00 a.m. She couldn’t even hold down water, so she
and I “slept” on the floor near the bathroom (after she originally vomited all
over the brand new carpet we just had installed in her bedroom). Poor thing was
up about every 30 minutes until 4:00 am and then things slowed down, but we’re
still experimenting with keeping water down this morning.
So
pray that Celia gets better soon without having to venture out into the snow to
see a doctor, and pray the rest of the family doesn’t get sick!

India, about a tragedy that occurred today in the far northern part of that
state. We recently began work in that area, and I want to share the latest news
about it with you.
Two bombs exploded on a local passenger train, killing at least six people and
injuring 50 more. A local terrorist group is suspected, but you and I know the
real source of such death and destruction—Satan.

then pray with me that God will raise up an army of native missionaries and
prayer partners who will claim this unreached region for Christ.
