I just got in from two very enjoyable shows at the Iron Horse in Northampton. It was kind of like the two sides of Dan Bern. The 7 PM show subdued and Eben and Dan played acoustically. Then, the 10 PM show was more of a rock show, with Eben on elecric.

I do not have a set-list; I didn't keep one but I am sure Gabe did. He opened with "Rolling Away", "One Thing Real" and "Black Tornado". He also played "Tape". He played "I Need You" which was a thrill for me as it is, in my opinion, of the the best songs of his he has never recorded. The band version has a nice Chelsea Hotel-esque vibe. Then the rest of the show were new songs. My favorite new songs are still "Desert Wind"(which he sang in the second set) and "Fly Away". I agree with Kevin that the band version is completely different but I think it approves on the song. Awhile ago, I mentioned that "Fly Away" may have new lyrics. It seems to have 3 new lines at the begginning of the second verse that isn't in the Gainesville show.

As for the rest of the new songs he played, having only heard them once all I can say is that I liked them. I liked "Where Did My Friends Go" a lot and "Jail" is a cool song.

In the second set, he opened with "Chelsea Hotel" and "Black Tornado". There also was "Turning Over", a kick-ass version of "Alaska Highway" and a superb version of "God Said No". He ended with "Follow Your Soul".

I really enjoyed seeing two totally different sets in one night. The crowd was quite responsive as always. Way too tired to be staring at a computer screen. 'Til the Turning Point....

<Late show setlist snipped>

The early show was relaxed and mellow. They were all sitting down. Eben and Dan both played acoustic guitars. Wil was on grand piano. I really liked this set-up.

At one point Dan said, "We played the Meadowlands last night". Someone in the audience asked, "How'd it go?". He said, "All right". Dan's introduction to I Need You: "This song is on my best album that only came out in Taiwan". After Annie Beasley, Jake asked, "Can we play some punk rock?" They played "I Ain't Answerable To You", which I guess is punk enough.

Last night, due to the fact that I was sleep deprived, I forgot to mention a few things and Gabe covered most of them. I really liked "Land of the Great In-Betweens". Like Gabe, I really liked the set-up. It fit the venue well and they make quite a nice sound in that format. I enjoyed the last show too. It may have been because it was near midnight, but the second show seemed way too short. With that said, the hour or so they did play was
intense. I can only imagine what the Irving Plaza show was like.

A few more things about last night.

I agree with Adam. I loved "Land of the Great In Between", which I don't think I've heard before. The second set was short, just barely an hour. Forgot to mention that the encore "Follow Your Soul" was an unplugged audience sing-along. As Dan, Eby, and Slim left the stage, Wil and Jake continued to jam for a while. I also liked the way they start out with the popular album tracks first (get those out of the way) and then proceed into newer/non-album/obscure songs. That seemed to be the pattern these past couple days.

Great opening acts, too. The National rocked! I rather enjoyed Clem Snide's set in NYC. Although, he may have gone a bit overboard with his rendition of "Hopelessly Devoted To You".

I havent seen this one transcribed yet. It's my favorite of the new ones, and the highlight of Fridays late show at the Iron Horse. Sounded great with the band. Otherwise I was disappointed with the late show Fri. Way too short (less than an hour), and way to much NAL that in my opinion the band can't add much to. Also it seemed like it was just another rock show with little or no talk and sticking strictly to the set list. Just my opinion,

I enjoyed the late show but the early show was the highlight show of the night. Also, this may just be me, but I dont think rock sounds as good in the IH than it does elsewhere. The band wasn't extremely loud but my ears were ringing afterwards.

i thought the second show was great..a little too short perhaps..but maybe i'm used to the marathon nyc shows....the irving plaza rocked.....the audience finally got into it towards the end of the show..it was my first time at the ih but i thought the sound was ok.....loved hearing some some songs for the first time.....what a writer...

and the band is getting tighter and tighter.....hope he.s back in the east soon....
