Madeline Hayes, born in Los Angeles in 1950, was a model turned detective. After learning of her accountant running off with her millions, she walked into one of her failed business investments, City of Angels Investigations, on March 3, 1985, with the expectation to close it down. There she met David Addison, and it was fight at first sight. David tries to convince Maddie not to close down the agency and to give him another chance, she downright refuses, not wanting 'the likes of him' at her face. David did not give up hope. He finally convinces her to help him solve a big jewel case. They succeed and City of Angels became known as Blue Moon Detective Agency and the two go into business together and the rest is Blue Moon history. She struggles to maintain a business-like decorum in the office, which is hard to do with Addison's parties, coworkers whose motto is, "no work AND pay" and constantly engaging in arguments with Addison that end in slamming doors.

David Addison, born in South Philadelphia in 1955, lives by a sole motto, "Live fast, die young, leave clean underwear." Addison, an ex-bartender from New York, came to L.A. and opened up City of Angels Investigations. In an attempt not to be closed down by owner Madeline Hayes, he convinces her to help him solve their 'first big case.' He begins to teach her to loosen up, and to "walk without her shoes." David is brash and enjoys having a good time. He can be found limboing, singing and dancing to rhythm and blues and making snide remarks to Maddie. He works his way through cases, the few they manage to get, with plenty of show tunes.
