The series was created Glenn Gordon Caron.
"Moonlighting" made its debut Sunday, March 3, 1985, on the ABC Network. The two hour Pilot aired from 9:00-11:00 P.M. It then moved to Tuesday nights at 9:00 P.M. However in early 1989, the series moved to Sunday nights at 8:00 P.M. The series final episode aired Sunday, May 14, 1989. It was seen in syndication on Lifetime Cable from 1992 to 1994 but was cancelled because the network no longer owned the rights to the show. However, The Bravo Television cable channel begin airing Moonlighting episodes on January 2nd, 2000. Follow this link for details.
The series was set in a office building complex in "Century City" California. The show was filmed in Los Angeles, California.
Moonlighting was a romance/comedy/detective drama series that was the story of a detective agency,
Blue Moon Investigations. The series revolved mainly around the two main characters,
David Addison and Madeline Hayes, their relationship with each other and their
personal and professional lives. Later in the series, the show portrayed the relationship
between two other Blue Moon employees, Agnes DiPesto and Herbert Viola.
You can currently catch it on syndication on the Bravo TV Cable
Channel.
David Addison was born on April 9, 1955, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was named after
his father, David Addison Sr., ("The Son Also Rises"), and has one older brother, Richard, whom he hadn't seen in years and called him, "mom and dad's science project", ("Brother, Can You Spare a Blond"). His mother is deceased and his father
later remarried a woman David slept with years ago (but she doesn't remember him). Interesting enough, she "won" him by playing a game of pool. He moved to New York City where he landed a job as a bartender. He later relocated to Los Angeles where he opened up his own detective agency and became a private investigator at the City of Angels Investigations. David lives a carefree lifestyle, loves to sing (off-tune), play the harmonica, and tell jokes, preferably about underwear. We know that he likes to gamble occasionally, and has a system that sometimes brings him luck. Because of his 'gambling stride, he's known as "Ace in the Hole Addison".
Madeline "Maddie" Hayes was born on November 27, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois. She is the only
daughter of Alexander and Virginia Hayes ("Every Daughter's Father is a Virgin"). Maddie became a model at the age of 14 and was successful up until she was about 30. Her big break came from being the spokesmodel for Blue Moon Shampoo. She lived a pampered life until she woke up one morning to find that her accountant, Ronald Sawyer, ran off with her millions. Advised by her
lawyer to liquidate some investments she maintained as tax write-offs, she arrived at David
Addison's detective agency with the sole intent of putting it out of business, and wound up
working alongside David Addison. Maddie has more sophisticated tastes, and is a very organized
person, unlike her associate, David Addison.
In the pilot episode, Maddie went to the detective agency in order to sell it
because of her near bankruptcy. When she meets up with the boss and man in charge, David
Addison, sparks fly immediately, and for the first half of the episode they argue about keeping
the agency open. David follows Maddie on a date trying to reason with her, and it is there that
a man dies literally at their feet. David uses this opportunity to involve Maddie on their first
case, which convinces Maddie at the end that becoming a private investigator has promise.
In the second season episode, "Money Talks...Maddie Walks" Maddie learns from a fellow
victim of her accountant that Ronald Sawyer has taken their money and built a casino/hotel
in Buenos Aires in South America. In a mad rage for justice, Maddie grabs the first flight
out of L.A. and runs to the casino, demanding that Sawyer return her money. When he subtly
laughs in her face, she is angry, until David shows up and together they gamble and win 20
grand. However, Maddie enters a high stakes poker game between her, David and Sawyer trying
to win all of her money back. When she is faced with the possibility of losing her winnings
and her house, car, and Blue Moon, David convinces her to 'fold' from the game saying,
"Your fortune's not here, it's back in L.A. ..." Needless to say, Maddie would have won and
when she found out what hand Sawyer had, she chased Addison who said, "Whoops!"
From what we know, Maddie has boinked with Sam Crawford, a college boyfriend, David Addison, and Walter Bishop,
her husband of two weeks (though it's not certain if the two actually did boink...Maddie
was very pregnant when she married Walter). We know that she has dated two other men (Pilot, Symphony in Knocked
Flat) although boinking status is unknown. In the episode, "The Color of Maddie" David bets
Maddie that she's been with six men in her life, which Maddie neither confirms nor denies.
From what we know, David has boinked with 5 women, if not more. Tess, his ex-wife, Stephanie,
who later became his stepmother, Gillian, his former girlfriend, Maddie Hayes and toward the end of the series he got involved with a married woman, Annie, Maddie's cousin.
As stated above, David and Maddie did have a brief intimate relationship at the end of the third season,
in the episodes, "I am Curious Maddie" through "A Trip to the Moon," after which
Maddie discovers that she is pregnant, but is unaware of who the father is. It could be Sam or
David.
Yes, each has been married once. David was married to Tess, a high school girlfriend
for a brief time back in New York, when he was 19 years old, because she was pregnant. Tess
lost the baby, and the marriage ended when David found her in bed with another woman.
In the third season episode, "Big Man on Mulberry Street" David returns to New York to attend
the funeral of Tess's brother. Maddie eloped with Walter Bishop, a fellow Amtrack passenger,
in the fourth season episode, "Tracks of My Tears." The two remained married for two weeks,
until Walter suggested an annullment in "And the Flesh was made Word" because of
Maddie's obvious feelings for David.
She met him on a train and began to tell him her history. They eloped while
they were stopped in Las Vegas. Maddie told David, upon returning to the agency after four months
of "hiding" in Chicago, that she met Walter and fell in love with him. David laughed, thinking
that she married Walter only to spite him. The theory is that Maddie married Walter because
she feared coming home and Walter was something to lean back on. Walter knew that Maddie didn't
truly love him and agreed that an anullment was best.
Maddie took life quite seriously, and wanted her life to be an accomplishment.
She didnt put much stock in the supernatural, and admitted that she was an Atheist in the
episode, "In God We Strongly Suspect."
David believed in spontenatey, living life for the moment. His motto was "Live fast, die
young, leave clean underwear." He pondered such philisophical questions as, "Do bears
bear? Do bees bee?" which were considered to be classic "Addisonisms."
In the episode, "Tracks of My Tears," Maddie tells David and Walter that the baby is Sam
Crawford's, the man she had a fling with immediately preceeding her involvement with David.
However, in "A Womb with a View", Jerome, the baby's guardian angel, tells it that its parents
are Maddie and David, a fact that neither ever discovered.
Maddie and David had a physical relationship at the end of third season, after
she broke up with Sam Crawford, which in TV time, lasted for about a month. It ended when
Maddie, guilt-ridden about the affair, ran to her parents home in Chicago to hide. It was
there that she discovered that she was pregnant, but wasn't sure who the father was. When she
returned to L.A. four months later, David became bitter in some ways. They never fully
resumed their romance, but tried to remain friends, which was difficult at the end.
In "Lunar Eclipse", they tried to get married in the 5 minutes left in the episode
because the ABC exec, Sy, told them that the audience wanted romance, not friendship.
In the second season episode, "My Fair David", Maddie persuades David to "grow up" when she finds him limboing with the staff. Although David tries, he doesn't become the full fledged businessman that Maddie dreamed of. In the third season episodes, "Symphony in Knocked Flat", and "A Trip to the Moon" David also tries to "clean up" so that Maddie will be impressed by him on their dates.
From the pilot to Lunar Eclipse, Maddie went from being a spoiled rich girl to a human being. In the pilot, she lived in a mansion, had at least three servants that we know of (a chauffeur, a cook, and a maid) and did nothing with her time but shop, travel, and sleep. Once she went broke, her servants left, and Maddie had to learn to control her bank account. She still kept the mansion, and drove a BMW that was a company car but she was pretty much used to working every weekday at the end. Maddie came to enjoy her work as a detective, and thrived on making Blue Moon as successful as possible.
David's lifestyle didnt change as drastically as Maddie's throughout the show. He lived in an apartment that had no furniture in the living room, until he bought a couch and some fans in the fifth season episode, "Eine Klein Nacht Murder." He had no car of his own, except for when Maddie bought him a 'economical' car in the fifth season episode, "Take My Wife for Example" which he secretly despised. David did mature a little by the end of the series, and became more business oriented, but still kept his crazy sense of humor.
Boinking, or 'boink' is David's acronym for sex, one that annoys Maddie to no end. This is clearly seen in the first season episode, "The Next Murder You Hear."
Maddie and David have the typical love/hate relationship that one may classify as, "they hate to love and love to hate." The first three seasons portray the duo solving cases, arguing, disagreeing, slamming doors, and talking rapidly and extensively at the same time, while underneath each is attracted to the other and truly care for each other. After they get involved at the end of the 3rd season, ("I am Curious...Maddie") Maddie and David spend half of fourth season apart, trying to resolve their feelings for each other. After Maddie's return to L.A., the couple faces some major challenges, including Maddie's marriage to a man she met briefly on the train, the loss of her baby, and David's feelings of betrayal that leaves tension between them for pretty much the rest of the series, even though they agree to remain as "pals."
Agnes DiPesto has been the rhyming receptionist at Blue Moon since before the series began. She was probably about 30 years of age when the series began and is from Bakersfield, CA, where her elderly mother resided. We know that she is of Italian descent, and can speak Italian somewhat fluently. She enjoys reading mysteries by J.B. Harlan.
Herbert "Burt" Viola began his stint at Blue Moon as a temp, but stayed on permanently and showed some skill at detecting. He is also of Italian descent, has a large family that mainly resides in the East, and is involved in the garlic business. He is quite insecure when in comes to the opposite sex; however, Agnes has played a major role in drawing him out from that shell.
Macgillicuddy, we never know of his first name, is one of the Blue Moon employees. While his job is not exactly clear, we know that he has eloped, gotten divorced, and has a heart condition. He is not seen much the first few seasons, but later in the series he and Burt often spar, mainly over Agnes. He dies of heart failure in the series final episode, "Lunar Eclipse" simply because, 'he doesnt' have anymore scenes.
In the third season episode, "Yours, Very Deadly" Burt debuted as a temp working for Blue Moon. Agnes attacks him and chases him around the office, which unnerves him. A few episodes later, he is chasing after her, and soon after moved in together.
In the series, Agnes was only involved with men three times. In the first season episode, "Next Stop Murder" she had a brief fling with a passenger on board the murder mystery train, Rodney, who turned out to be a murderer. In the second season episode,"North By North Dipesto", Agnes develops a crush on a spy involved in a case she was mixed up in. Finally, Herbert Viola came along, and thus began a long term romance initiated by her in, "Yours, Very Deadly." Although they were never shown, Agnes confided to Maddie in a few episodes about having "boinked" with a football team, and also having a date with the sandwich delivery man.
This information is still being sought at this time.
Yes, Burt, Maddie, and Agnes's mother all attempted the rhyming game. While Mrs. DiPesto displayed a charming witt at this technique (Agnes had to have gotten it somewhere) Burt's rhymes were disapproved by the office with the staff holding their noses.
Originally named City of Angels Investigations (after the city), David renamed it Blue Moon Detective Agency early in the pilot episode for Maddie, after her stint as the Blue Moon Shampoo Girl.
Before Maddie became involved with the agency, David really had no cases, and in the first season episode following the pilot, "Gunfight at the So-So Corral" David got their first official client by pulling a perspective client out of the waiting room of another agency. Little did they know that their client was a hitman, who sought another hitman in order to have a battle "once and for all" for the title.
In the pilot episode, after a man died of a stab wound at Maddies feet, the criminals met up with the two at her house where they threatened their lives. Thus, the two were thrown into the case when David convinced Maddie it was safer to search for the stolen diamonds rather than turning the main clue to the police. Along the way, he leaked to the press that Maddie and he were going into business together. Once they diamonds were recovered and the criminal was caught, David kept offering the prospect of going into business together, which the episode concluded with Maddie saying, maybe.
Blue Moon is located in downtown Los Angeles, in some office building, on the twentieth floor, office suite 2016.
Other than the pilot episode, Maddie considers selling the agency two more times in the series. In the second season episode, "Atlas Belched", she does sell it to the competition, Lou LaSalle, for a tidy sum, but finds that her old lifestyle isnt exactly what she wanted. At the end of the episode, Lou sells the agency back to Maddie in exchange for a case of his biggest client. In the third season episode, "It's a Wonderful Job" Maddie fantasizes about selling the agency when the office is angry with her for working during the Christmas holiday. In this spoof of the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life," Maddie's guardian angel shows her what life would be like if she had indeed sold the agency.
In the episode "In God We Strongly Suspect" there were 8 employees including Agnes and Macgillicuddy that threw Maddie a surprise birthday party, so it would be 9 with Burt. Other than Agnes and Burt, no real job was ever stated for any of them, no one ever really does much work, and their motto being "NO WORK AND PAY". In the early episodes, David used to engage in party-like behavior with them by playing limbo, strip poker, and other games.
Macgillicuddy, Agnes, Burt had small roles and three others, Jurgensen, O'Neill, and a woman, Jaime, had small speaking parts.
The answer depends on the viewer. Some may say it was David and Maddie's "great" detective skills. Some may say it was Agnes DiPesto, her organization of the job. Some may say it could have been David's light heartedness, or Maddie's strictness.
Because Maddie maintained the detective agency (as well as other investments) as tax write offs. David and the staff did little work at their jobs, and much playing. In the pilot episode, Maddie's lawyer informed her that the agency lost over 400 grand that year. On Maddie's first day in the office, Agnes informed her of their strict schedules, which included a weekly manicurist, a sandwich delivery, etc. In later episodes Agnes commented on how Maddie's arrival improved Blue Moon.
Other than the BMW they seem to share, David and Maddie have transported throughout their cases in planes, balloons, stolen trucks or cars, old fashioned cars, and bikes.
Absolutely any kind. Blue Moon Investigations was not your typical, every day detective agency, by any means. Some of the cases were actually initiated by David or Maddie themselves. Clients had come into Maddie and DavidŐs offices requesting odd tasks such as witnessing a suicide, watching a dead body, and doctoring photographs for a faithful spouse. Here are some of the statistics of cases they've solved:
This was never made clear, and remains a mystery until this day. The Anselmo case was a case originally started by David and Burt while Maddie was in Chicago. From some of the conversation about the case, we know that it involved a large family, the Anselmo's, who have populations on both coasts. We can guess that maybe it had something to do with marital trouble, because there was surveillance on "Mrs. Anselmo" in a hotel. We know that it was a big case, because Maddie complained about the stress of it, and when David used an employee to trick Annie, the employee commented on how lucky she was to work on the Anselmo case. Unfortunately, the case was never solved, due to the series ending, a remains a mystery for another detective show to uncover!
The quadruple have endured chases as ordinary as running, along with less common methods, such as flying a plane, hanging from a hot-air balloon, on bicycles, in wheelchairs, cars, laundry bags, milk trucks, and in costume. The chase scene is one of the highlights of the show, and is often referred to the audience by David. "Start the chase music, boys!"
The Blue Moon staff absorbed each detail of David and Maddie's relationship like a love story in a novel. They were often caught listening at the door to their conversations during the romance, and absolutely hated Walter Bishop. Agnes especially conspired to get the two together in later episodes, and confided to Maddie what everyone thought of them. When the series ended, Agnes yelled at the two for "not straightening out their nitt witt relationship" and insisted that she and Burt be given their own spinoff.
Blue Moon Investigations ceased operations on May 14, 1989 when Moonlighting went off the air concluding its fifth season.
Burt and Agnes married after Agnes proposed and Burt broke his jaw. They are still awaiting their own spinoff. Macgillicuddy died of a heart attack. Whereabouts of the other employees are unknown.
David and Maddie attempted to marry in the time left of Moonlighting, but failed. The series ended with the couple sitting below the church altar reminiscing about the past five years, with the song, "We'll be together again" playing.
Gunfight at the So-So Corral (Gunfight at the OK Corral)
Fourteen, including, "Big Man on Mulberry Street" and "Money Talks, Maddie Walks" which involve the couple travelling to New York and Buenos Aires, respectively. In the episodes "Come Back Little Siska" through "Fetal Attraction" all scenes with Maddie take place in Chicago.
About Six. These episodes involve Herbert, Agnes and Macgillicuddy, another employee slightly attracted to Agnes. These include: North by North DiPesto, Polterguiest III-DiPesto Nothing, Los Dos DiPestos, Here's Living with You, Kid, In 'N Outlaws
Twenty. (They will be listed here)
Ten. Season Two: Money Talks...Maddie Walks, The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice; Season Three: Big Man on Mulberry Street, It's a Wonderful Job; Season Four: A Trip to the Moon, Come Back Little Siska, Cool Hand Dave (Two), Tracks of my Tears, Here's Living with You, Kid; Season Five: I See England, I see France, I see Maddie's Netherworld.
Sixteen. (They will be listed here)
Approximately five episodes refer to either Dave, Maddie, or Burt investigating the case. Most of the time it was shifted aside for the current episodes problems, until Lunar Eclipse, the final episode, in which it was the main focus.
Yes they do. One aspect of Moonlighting that makes it unique is the references to the audience. Maddie and Dave often turn to the audience for support in midst of an argument (David: "I'm at a loss, I don't know what a flying fig is". Maddie: "That's okay..they do". David then winks at the camera.), or comments on the obvious (David: "You knew I wouldn't let her go by herself".) Some shows open with Dave and Maddie in character, addressing the audience, and discussing fan mail, ratings, and the theme song.
Approximately seventeen times one or more character has made a reference such as "they're not in tonights episode" or "they dont want to watch that" or "if we get any more serious, they'll move us to cable."
No, and that was what made Moonlighting such a fun show!! Unlike other primetime series, Moonlighting never tried to preach any values to America, and was an all around fun show. It even make fun of itself as a tv show.
The theme was composed by Lee Holderidge and performed by Al Jarreau.
In the begining of the fifth season episode, "Those Lips, Those Lies," Al is "absent" and unaware of the move to Sunday night and Maddie and Dave each attempt to sing the theme, but neither made it past a few bars. Agnes pushed Burt out, who lip-syncs the song in Al's voice.
The soundtrack for Moonlighting is available and is distributed by MCA Records ©1987. For more information on what tracks are on the soundtrack please visit: http://home.earthlink.net/~bcmadsen/Moonlighting/soundtrack.html
Cybill Shepherd was born February 11, 1950 in Memphis, TN. (MORE INFO LATER)
Bruce Willis was born on March 19, 1955, in West Germany, where his father was stationed
in the army. The family relocated to Penns Grove, New Jersey. Willis is currently married to actress, Demi Moore, whom he married in 1987 and the together the couple have three children. Click here to see an indepth view of Bruce's TV and Film work.
Allyce's real name is Allyce Tannenberg, but she changed it to Allyce Beasley because an old boy friend thought football player Beasley Reece was tops. Brooklyn born, Allyce wanted to be an actress early on, but there were those who didn't encourge her. While taking drama class with drama legend Lee Strasberg, she felt demoralized. Strasberg embarrassed her any chance he could and told her she could never be talented. She has had small parts on Taxi and Cheers. While making the Taxi episode she met actor Vincent Schiavelli, who appeared on the Moonlighting episode, "Next Stop Murder" and in 1985 they wed. The couple had one son and divorced in 19**. Glenn Gordon Caron immediately saw her gift during the Moonlighting audition.
As far as it is known, Bruce Willis won an emmy award for "Best Actor in a Drama Series" in 1987.
