* ASFA points are used to determine when a dog is a Field Champion. A dog needs 100 points and either two 1st places or one 1st and two 2nds to become a Field Champion. Field Champions need 300 points and four 1st places in Field Champion stake to become a Lure Courser of Merit. Note that places only count if another dog finished below you. ( ie Finishing 1st by yourself or 2nd in a two dog race does not count.) |
| ASFA points = (4 for 1st, 3 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd, 1 for 4th) X (Total number of dogs in stake, including self) |
| |
** Bowen points are used to determine a dog's rank among all ASFA lure coursers within the breed. (ie 1st, 2nd , 3rd... among all coursers in the entire ASFA organization.) |
| Bowen points = 1 point for self + number of dogs finished below you. Best of Breed gets points for dogs in other stakes as well. |

|
Stakes: |
| Single: Solo race competing against all other Single stake dogs, regardless of breed. Earns no ASFA or Bowen points. Not eligible for Best of Breed or Best of Field races. Starting stake for new lure coursers. |
| |
| Open: Race against own breed only. Dogs run in trios. Dogs must pass a certification before entering the Open stake. |
| |
| Field Champion: Same as Open stake except it consist of dogs that are Field Champions. |
| |
| Veteran: Same as Open stake except it consist of older dogs. Age varies by breed. For most, 6+ is considered veteran. |
| |
| Best of Breed: A course consisting of the 1st place dog within each stake for a breed. (1st place in Open, Field Champion and Veteran) The winner gets Best of Breed, which earns them Bowen points for the stakes they were not in, and a cool ribbon.
As long as he did not win by forfeit, the BOB winner also earns ASFA points equal to the stake with the most points. (ie If the BOB winner had 1 other dog in his stake and the other stake had 3 dogs, he would earn 12 points instead of 8.) Note that forfeits do not matter for bowen points and they
are added together, not just the highest. So the dog above would earn 5 bowen points. |
| |
| Best of Field: A course consisting of all the Best of Breed winners from each breed. It is not always offered at an event but the winner gets Best of Field. It is not worth anything but bragging rights and a ribbon. Some clubs also have a traveling trophy that is awarded for Best of Field during one event a year. |
