Late 19th Century English Slate 'HOCK' Bin Label Rare slate bin label for 'Hock' wine measuring approximately 5 5/8 X 7 5/8 inches. Black enamelled over slate, then hand painted with the words 'SHERRY' & 'Vintage'. A square approx. 2 5/8 inches is left unpainted in the lower right hand corner of the label for writing the wine's vintage year. Reverse of label is unpainted. Bin labels were used to indicate the type of wine & its vintage year, for the wine stored in a given cellar bin. Bin labels are usually hung at the top of each bin, so the label has a small hole near its top for hanging. This label may have been for a large private cellar, or perhaps that of a restaurant. The number on the label ('62' at the top) would have corresponded to a master wine list to serve as a cross reference. Section of slate missing in lower right. Condition 'as-is' 5/10. $165.00 |
