- Since July 2004 IBM, Westford, MA
I joined the IBM Globalization Leadership Team reporting to the corporate globalization executive. I was instrumental in producing a Globalization Test Wizard that identifies areas for globalization testing in software products. I am now Globalization Test architect for IBM software group and the owner of the GVT process.
I have also redesigned and supervised the deployment of a new software globalization assessment system that is used to assess IBM software.
I am currently managing the the design and development of the IBM internal globalization managment system that manages the globalization of all IBM software group products. This involves everything from collecting initial stakeholder requirements, through design, review and deployment of the system.
Member of the LISA USA forum 2010 program committee.
July 1, 2007 promoted to Senior Software Engineer.
- November 2002 - June 2004 IBM, Westford, MA
I joined the GPD@Westford team which is part of the Global Product Development team of IBM to be the International Test lead for the Next Generation Mail product: a J2EE application that runs on Websphere and DB2 called IBM Lotus Workplace. I was in the Globalization Lab at the Lotusphere 2003 and in the Workplace Lab at Lotusphere 2004 in Orlando.
- May 1997 - November 2002 Iris Associates, Westford, MA
Iris Associates was a wholly owned subsidiary of Lotus/IBM and the creators of the Lotus Notes and Domino, Sametime (Instant messaging), iNotes Web Access, and Quickplace Lotus products. In October 2001 Iris employees changed over to IBM payroll and so I became an IBM employee in their Messaging and Collaboration Software development division.
In addition to Notes clients, the Domino server also supports HTTP (dynamic web publishing with development IDE with support for dynamic language switching and fallback), Java, Javascript, LotusScript, Lotus formula language and ASP and XML, as well as other standard internet protocols such as SMTP, POP3, NNTP, LDAP, IMAP. Domino runs on multiple platforms.
Initially employed as International Software Quality Engineer, I soon demonstrated my international product management skills and I became the International Program Manager for Notes and Domino. Duties included general "International Evangelism", decisions on the international impacts of features and bugs in our products, training of development, QE and support staff on international issues and requirements, provision of documents and machines to enable international development and testing, liaison with translation offices around the world to resolve enabling and localization issues, general international guru, etc.
I attended the LotuSphere Berlin 1999 and 2000 as well as Lotusphere 2002 in Orlando as a 'Meet the developers' lab staff member to answer technical questions on the products. I am part of the Engineering Outreach team for Bayer AG and Deutsche Bank and in 2002 I was also a key grip for the Deutsche Bank early deployment of Domino 6.
In 2000 and 2001, I organized and ran a Son's day event (similar to Daughter's day) at work in which about 80 employee's sons came to the office for a day and were shown and taught aspects of working in the software industry.
- Feb 1994 - April 1997: Software Engineer at the XyQuest division of The Technology Group Inc. in Westford, MA. Major projects
were (1) the creation of a German version of a Windows XyWrite
word processing package (estimated size: 200,000 lines of
code and 5,000 text resources) (2) the debugging and
development of interface components for Windows products.
Languages used: Embedded Basic, Visual Basic (34,000
lines of code), XPL, with some C and Assembler (3) development of dynamic Q&A interface for Wealth Transfer Planning.
Resources used: Microsoft Developers Platform, CompuServe Forums.
In 1994 I presented a XyWrite for Windows course to Minnesota Sun Publications.
Germany
- Feb 1991 - Jan 1994: Employed by North American Software GmbH in
Munich, Germany as a Technical Consultant for a range of
German software packages under DOS and Windows including Drafix Windows CAD, Euroscript (word processor), askSam (database information
manager), HiJaak (graphics conversion).
All support and assistance to customers was conducted in German.
In 1991 I gave two software courses to IBM Denmark in Copenhagen.
- In July 1992 I was promoted to Support Manager. Duties
included supervision of Technical Support, localization of
bugs, liaison and coordination with US companies for the
translation and testing of new versions and packages. I was
also responsible for the day to day running of the Novell
network and the design, installation and maintenance of the
inventory, customer database and financial software on the
network.
South Africa
- Aug 1989 - Jan 1991: Appointed Lecturer in the Department of
Surveying and Mapping at the University of Natal where I
lectured Digital Image Processing and Computer Literacy.
- Jan 1988 - Jul 1989: Employed by the Computer Services Division
at the University of Natal as an Information Center
Consultant for both PCs and Sperry 1100 mainframe. In
addition to assisting staff and students with their
everyday computer hardware and software problems,
specialized duties included giving courses on the use of
word processing, and editing and compiling the University's
Computer User Bulletin. A promotion to Senior Information
Center Consultant was awarded after 6 months. I was also
responsible for the writing, running and presentation of a
digitally controlled model train (using Pascal) at the
University's first Computer Fair in July 1989.
Packages supported: XyWrite, SPSS, Kermit, Procomm, MS-DOS, Quattro Pro, dBase, GLitch, Nota Bene, etc.
- Jan 1986 - Dec 1987: Employed by the Natal Education Department
as a high school teacher. The duties entailed teaching
Computer Literacy, Technical Drawing and Geography. During
this period, I continued to do consultations for
researchers at the University of Natal, writing a
relational database system to store and retrieve literature
references on PCs. The resulting program was called GLitch,
which was refined through to version 4. A student records
and academic grades program for the Department of
Psychology at the University of Natal was also completed.
- Jan 1984 - Dec 1985: Employed by the Natal Education Department during
my compulsory 2 years military service. In May 1984 I was
transferred from Personnel Services School in Pretoria to 1 Reconnaissance Regiment in Durban, receiving the promotion
to Lance Corporal in April 1985, followed by Full Corporal
in July 1985. In addition to regular servicemen duties, I
compiled and computerized a bird checklist for the military
area on a Sperry mainframe.
- 1980 - 1983: Employed (part time whilst obtaining my degrees) by
Computer Services (University of Natal) as an SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences)
Consultant, for the Sperry 1100 mainframe during which time
I also wrote programs to store, retrieve and validate
ornithological data including the development of a check digit
system for the validation of species numbers. In 1983 I was
invited to Australia by the Royal Australasian
Ornithological Union to discuss the computerization of
their avifaunal data. I was also commissioned to
computerize a nation-wide inventory of recreational
facilities for the Institute of Social and Economic
Research at the University of Durban-Westville.
