Notes:
(1) Gull Rocks Light was first built as private beacon to mark the hazardous rock reef.  In 1877, the government replaced the beacon with a unusual A-frame Lighthouse to mark the North Entrance to Newport Harbor.

(2) Keepers would raise Lanterns to the East and West end of the A-frame’s peak.

(3) In 1928, the two Fixed Lights were replaced by a single acetylene Flashing Green Light on a skeleton tower next to the A-frame dwelling.  Newport Harbor Light at Goat Island was also included in the duties of the Gull Rocks Light-keeper.  The Keeper’s House was razed in the mid-1960s after Newport Harbor Light was automated.

(4) On Jan 8, 1970, the Skeleton Light was removed by helicopter and replaced by the Lights of the Newport Bridge.  The Oil House is the only existing building on Gull Rocks and the reef is currently marked by the Gull Rocks South Buoy.
