New Spring Class Coming Up--Sign up today!

Let's Make a Quilt: An Artists' Workshop

Students will learn how to make a lap-top-size quilt using a free-form strip method of piecing developed by the instructor, a nationally recognized quilt artist. Students will learn how to create quilt blocks using the line and color of the fabric; a pattern is not used. The class will begin with an introduction to the techniques that will be used and a written guide for directions; the remaining class periods will be dedicated to in-class work on the quilt project. Prior quilting experience is not necessary, but students must provide their own materials: a sewing machine in good working order capable of a straight stitch and a walking foot attachment are required. Additional materials that students will need to bring to class (fabric, thread, ruler, cutter, etc.) are listed on the OLLI website.

Instructor: Deborah Fell is an artist whose medium is quilting. Her tools include natural fabrics, fiber-reactive dyes, textile paints, stitching, and repurposed objects. She creates dimension, movement, and depth using line and color. Deborah creates art quilts because they are a means of self-expression which combines the beauty of art and the comforting tradition of quilting.

Day and Time: Tuesday, 12:00 - 3:30pm
Duration: 6 weeks, beginning March 19

Making a Quilt Top
 without a Pattern

june 2007 096

This is a great beginner class for learning how to make a smaller size quilt top using a random strip method of piecing.  A basic knowledge of traditional piecing is helpful but not necessary.  Students will learn how to create blocks using the line and color of the fabric.  A pattern is not used.  For students who work very fast, layering the quilt is optional--depending on the length of the class.

*Sewing Machine Required.

Five days

Each day offers a six hour session.

*Students responsible for supply list.

Beginning Design:
Making Art Quilts from Scraps

(formerly Postcards from the Edge)

You know how normal people pick up the garbage from a sewing session & throw it away?  This workshop is not for those people!   The goal of this workshop is to create  a smaller size art quilt studies using ‘remnants’ & ‘pieces’ of fabric.  Using your own personal stash of tiny fabric  pieces you might throw away, snippets, cording, heavy paper, unusual fabrics, an old sock, a sleeve from a sweater, citrus bags...get creative!  Establish a plastic  bin of goodies to choose from.  The more garbage you have, the more choices you will have for design options.    ‘Garbage’ will be assembled, collaged & finished into postcard size art quilts while considering basic design elements of art.  This is a great beginning class to help you find your design voice.

*Sewing Machine Required--if class is a two day class.

*Creating an inspiration book component if class is two days.

One or two days

Each day offers a six hour session.

  *Students responsible for supply list.

Lab fee--$10 per student plus tuition

Finding Inspiration
from Nature

This class is a wonderful intermediate class and follow up  to the Introduction to Art Quilt class.  Using a picture  from nature, a small composition will be designed using fusing, collage and piecing.  The workshop includes a walk  finding design in everyday things.  (Weather permitting)   A presentation focusing on the line and beauty in nature starts off the class and provides a base in which to work.  Various methodologies and problem solving design goals  will be a focus as well.

*Sewing Machine Required.

Two days

Each day offers a six hour session.

*Students responsible for supply list.

$25 lab fee per student plus tuition

A Play Day in the Studio:
Private Instruction

Don’t know anything about dyeing fabric with fiber  reactive dyes?  Then join me for a day of playtime in the studio.  Techniques included can include immersion dyeing, shibori, dye painting, textile painting, resist methods, foiling or topics of interest by the students.

Or if you would rather focus on design, free motion quilting, piecing or finishing a quilt—that can be an option as well!

If I know how to do it, I will share it!

Hours variable

*Students responsible for supply list depending on course of study.

Lab fee--$35--$50 per student plus tuition
