Green energy jobs coming to Deming, By Matt Robinson Headlight Staff Posted: 04/27/2009 "A series of facilities aimed at creating "green" self-sustaining communities across the globe are coming to Luna County. The Viable International Technology Associates Corporate Cooperative Network (VITA CCN) is planning to break ground on the VITA Renewable Energy Industrial Campus in Luna County within the next 60 to 90 days. "It's going to be one of our smaller projects, nationwide," Christopher Pride, chairman and founder said. "It's bringing four high-end, high-tech manufacturing facilities and a research institute."
The location, to be located near Rockhound Road and Monte Vista Road south of town, will manufacture silicon photovoltaic (solar panel) modules and energy management systems for residential and commercial use, among other projects, according to a VITA CCN release. In the first year alone, 100 jobs are expected to be created. After full expansion in two and three years, 300 jobs are expected to be created.
"I want to eradicate poverty in Luna County, I want to eradicate unemployment in Luna County," Pride said. "If I can do this in Luna County, VITA CCN could do it anywhere in the world." He added: "This is going to be the manufacturing hub." VITA CCN's vision states that as an environment for innovative studies is fostered, the VITA Corporate Campus will attract high-tech researchers to establish a "High-Desert Hub" of renewable energy activity. He said the project has a $400 million start-up cost and that it's "all private sector."
"From the moment we break ground to producing product, hoping within 18 months," he said on the timeline for the start-up. When asked why choose Deming, Pride said, "Because it's the diamond in the rough," adding, "One of the scientists at Sandia National Labs said, "Chris, you found the diamond in the rough.'" Luna County has been the target of other solar development companies and has been mentioned by several politicians because of the solar "hot-spot" properties.
In addition to the facilities, a 200-unit demonstration site subdivision will be created as a pilot project demonstrating the program "Total Solar Mass Urban/Rural Development." "This community housing development will serve as the showcase for our "affordable solar home mass urban/rural development concept' and will provide an on-the-job-training forum to spearhead worldwide implementation of the VITA CCN system and associated technologies," the release details. "The building system utilizes compressed earth blocks, light gauge cold rolled metal framing elements, high insulation value roofing, affordable photovoltaic solar power systems and environmentally self-contained perma-culture techniques for wastewater and sewage recycling." Pride said he began this "quest" in 1989. He has lived in Deming since February.
Deming Luna Mimbres Museum The museum is located in the old armory in Deming, built in 1916. The museum houses an extensive Mimbres Indian pottery collection, dolls, military artifacts, vehicles, antique furnishings, clothing, photos and other Old West relics. Catwalk The steel, mile-long catwalk in the Gila National Forest was named by miners who built a three-mile long pipeline to carry water from a mining site to the mill and town of Graham. Picnic sites are available.

Gila Cliff Dwellings In the heart of the three million-acre Gila National Forest, the dwellings have been a national monument since 1907. They date back to the late 1200s and include seven natural caves. Five contain ruins of dwellings with 42 rooms built of stone and mud.

In Silver City, 60 miles North of Deming They say on a quiet day you can still hear the hoof beats of Billy The Kid's horse as he tries make his escape from Pat Garrison. Or the tear drops of an Indian maiden as she weeps for the loss of both of her loves as they died fighting over her.

Fun History from early 1890s - Deming Wikepedia

Deming, NM was founded in 1881 and incorporated in 1902 and was named after Mary Ann Deming Crocker, wife of Charles Crocker, one of The Big Four of the railroad industry. The Mimbres River floods the Deming area once a decade or so, in periods of unusually heavy rainfall in the Cooke's Range and Black Range to the north. Deming and its surrounding area is underlain by an aquifer of good-quality water. The aquifer is slowly recharged primarily by water from the mountains to the north

Deming, NM is currently at 4331 feet above sea level, for those interested in climbing Cooks Peak, the top elevation is 8,408 feet above sea level. Petroglyphs left by the long-vanished Mogollon Culture are here, as well as Mimbres Culture lithic and dwelling sites. Except for the route to Cookes Peak, little hiking occurs here except for foot travel on old roads, with no maintained trails. Cooks Peak mountain is 20 miles north of Deming and was named after Mormon Battalion Captain Philip St. George Cooke (many maps omit the final "e" in the name) who passed through the area in the winter of 1846 with a battalion of U.S. soldiers. It was not until thirty later that there was any interest in mining at Cooks Peak. Even then, population was less than 100 people and the camp reached its greatest peak of prosperity in the early 1890s.

     The Road to Cook's Peak

If you'll listen a while I'll sing you a song,
And as it is short it won't take me long.
There are some things of which I will speak
Concerning the stage on the road to Cook's Peak.
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
Concerning the stage on the road to Cook's Peak.

It was in the morning at eight-forty-five,
I was hooking up all ready to drive
Out where the miners for minerals seek,
With two little mules on the road to Cook's Peak --
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
With two little mules on the road to Cook's Peak.

With my two little mules I jog along
    And try to cheer them with ditty and song;
O'er the wide prairie where coyotes sneak,
While driving the stage on the road to Cook's Peak.
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
While driving the stage on the road to Cook's Peak.

Sometimes I have to haul heavy freight,
Then it is I get home very late.
In rain or shine, six days in the week,
'Tis the same little mules on the road to Cook's Peak.
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
'Tis the same little mules on the road to Cook's Peak.

And when with the driving of stage I am through
I will to my two little mules bid adieu.
And hope that those creatures, so gentle and meek,
Will have a good friend on the road to Cook's Peak.
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
Will have a good friend on the road to Cook's Peak.

Now all kind friends that travel about,
Come take a trip on the Wallis stage route.
With a plenty of grit, they never get weak, --
Those two little mules on the road to Cook's Peak.
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
On the road to Cook's Peak, --
Those two little mules on the road to Cook's Peak.
