Advocate Services As a patient advocate, I can be a knowledgeable, objective observer to help you
with medical decisions. I will tailor my services based on your needs and preferences.
Depending on your needs, my advocacy services may include:
- clarifying your health problem
- interpreting medical information and presenting it in a format that is understandable to
you
- constructing questions for you to ask your clinicians
- accompanying you to medical visits, which can be helpful because it is common to forget
portions of the information doctors provide
- identifying options for approaching the problem
- identifying barriers that may prevent you from obtaining the best health care available
- considering strategies to help you obtain the best health care available
- helping you understand the risks and benefits of options
- talking to family members, jointly or individually
- locating sources of information and opinion and helping you access them
- differentiating evidence from opinion and fact from conjecture
- supporting you through your decision making process
Of course, patient advocacy
has limits. I will not provide medical treatment, order tests, prescribe or administer
medications as part of my consultation. I will not conduct medical examinations as part of
my services. All of those services will be provided to you by your treating physicians. I
will not make decisions for you. Decisions about your medical care will always be yours.
My services are completely confidential. I will not disclose any information about you
to any third party without your prior written consent.
We can meet in my home office or at another preferred place including your bedside.
