The latest ISDE news...
The 8th ICDEA took place in Brno/Czech Republic from July 28 - August 1, 2003. The following letter of the society's vice president gives the highlights. Please visit the official website for more information about the conference.
A letter from the vice president
The 8th annual meeting of the international society of difference equations (ISDE) was held in Brno, the Czech republic on July 28- August 1, 2003. In a special meeting of the society, the bylaws committee of Aulbach, Cushing, and Elaydi presented the bylaws of the society. After some revisions the bylaws were passed by a unanimous vote. An election committee consisted of Roman Hilscher (Czech), Eva Schmeidel (Poland) and Andreas Ruffing (Germany) conducted the election of new board of directors. The new members of the board of directors are: Bernd Aulbach, Gerry Ladas, Saber Elaydi, Allan Peterson, Martin Bohner, Ondrej Dosly, George Sell, Panayiotis Siafarikas, Istvan Gyori. The new board met and elected Bernd Aulbach as president for a second term for two years and Saber Elaydi as vice president for two years.
The society gave two more awards by a vote of members present, one for the best one-hour talk and the second for the best 30-minute talk.
I am negotiating with Taylor and Francis to offer members of the society a substantial discount for individual subscription of the journal of difference equations and applications. I will be reporting to you soon on the publishers offer.
Next annual meeting will be held in Los Angeles, California and will be organized by Robert Sacker of the University of Southern California. The tentative date of the meeting is July 26-30, 2004. This will be the tenth anniversary of this series of international conferences on difference equations, which started in 1994 in San Antonio, Texas. And we have come a long way since then.
We are negotiating with other groups to hold joint meetings in order to broaden the scope of our research interests. We have reached a tentative agreement to hold a joint meeting with the group of orthogonal polynomials and special functions in Munich in 2005. The meeting in 2006 is tentatively scheduled to be in Japan with Kazuo Nishimura as the leading organizer.
I urge all individuals and groups to consider hosting one of the future meetings of the society. Please contact Bernd Aulbach or me if you are interested. The society will provide help in logistics and pertinent organizational material to prospective organizers.
If you are not a member yet please join us and become a member of ISDE; it is still free!

The 9th ICDEA is planned to be held in Los Angeles/USA (USC) in 2004. More information on the ICDEA meetings and other ISDE matters will be posted here as it becomes available.
The 7th ICDEA (International Conference on Difference Equations and Applications) took place in Changsha/China from August 11 - 17, 2002. For a report, please click here.
The International Society of Difference Equations was officially born during ICDEA 2001. The highly successful conference was held in the historic city of Augsburg, Germany, from July 30 to August 3, 2001. As the photograph below shows, over 100 accomplished scholars from around the world, including several world-renowned scientists, participated in this conference and contributed to its success through their lectures and their interactions with other participants.

he success of the conference also owed much to the efforts of its lead organizer Bernd Aulbach and the staff, students and administration of the University of Augsburg who hosted the conference. More information about the conference (including the scientific program and a list of participants) can be found on the official website of ICDEA 2001.
Beginning with the 6th conference in Augsburg, Germany, the ICDEA conferences, including the 7th conference in Changsha, China, are organized under the auspices of the International Society of Difference Equations (ISDE). The previous meetings (prior to the formation of the ISDE) took place in San Antonio,Texas/USA (1994), Veszprém/Hungary (1995), Taipei/Taiwan (1997), Poznan/Poland (1998), Temuco/Chile (2000) and Augsburg/Germany(2001).
How the Society was Created:
At a general meeting on Monday July 30, attendants among the conference participants voted for the creation of the International Society of Difference Equations or ISDE, its first president as well as a board of advisors. Most participants in the conference signed up for membership in the Society.
What the Society Does:
The ISDE's main objective is to serve as a medium where its members can communicate and interact with each other and to facilitate as much as possible the development of the field of difference equations, defined in its broadest sense, deterministic or stochastic, qualitative or quantitative. Specialty areas include but are not limited to such topics as additive difference equations, difference inequalities and inclusions, dynamic equations on time scales, functional difference equations, difference-differential and partial difference equations, discrete boundary value problems, stochastic difference equations, recursion theory (combinatorial or analytic), finite difference methods and numerical approximation of differential equations, applications of difference equations in biology, economics, etc. and nearly all specialties under the heading of discrete dynamical systems, e.g., symbolic dynamics, complex dynamics, chaotic dynamics, bifurcation theory, and so on.
One of the ways in which the Society can accomplish its objective is by ogranizing international meetings for its members, generally on an annual basis, throughout the world. In particular, future ICDEA meetings will take place as meetings of the Society.
Additional information about the Society will be made available in due time on this newsletter and other websites.
Membership:
It was decided in the above meeting that the membership in ISDE would be free at this time and open to all scholars and students who work in the area of difference equations (as defined above). For a membership application in pdf format, please click here.
