Biography:

Denny was born in Santa Rosa, California in 1957; raised locally except for two years on OAHU where he attended his one and only art class in 1971. Generally discouraged from the arts, he pursued a career in MARINE ENGINEERING. After obtaining his Marine Engineering Degree from the CALIFORNIA MARITIME ACADEMY in 1984, Denny served as the CHIEF ENGINEER aboard both of the MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM RESEARCH INSTITUTE’S research vessels, the PT. LOBOS and THE WESTERN FLYER until 1997.

He took up oil painting in 1989 after being inspired by the works of Maxfield Parrish. One notable painting resulted from his brief efforts. That painting was entered into a Landscape Art Show in Pacific Grove, CA and accepted; resulting in two gallery offers. Denny attempted several paintings to satisfy the gallery requests, but he quickly understood that he was in over his head and set down the brushes for 11 long years.

Then, after taking a one-day water color class in Shingletown, CA in 2003, Denny returned to painting with a new sense of relaxation and purpose. The sea, which was once the source of his material sustenance from ships, now became his inspiration for painting from shore.

Working from his own photographs, his skills developed quickly and he started to produce some successful paintings within a few short months. Since then, he has tried his hand at a few landscapes, but quickly returned to seascapes as the passion for those has not subsided.

With a lot of support from family and fellow artists, Denny is continuing to paint and hopes one day to be represented by galleries and is happy to have his own website.
