Notes for Harriet Susan Weekes
Harriet Weekes Gore was William J. Weekes's young sister. Her life bridges the middle of the 19th centurey to the middle of the 20th century. Her father, Henry, was one of the last children of William and Anne born on a feudal estate in the rural midlands of Tipperary.

Harriet was known as a very loving, and yet strong woman. She emigrated from Ireland as a young woman and spent most of her life in New Jersey, She was a widow at the age of forty and lived a long life remaining close to her extended family in the United States.

This is Harriet's baptism record:

The Wax births in Dublin reveal only one female birth which did not result in the child dying young. That is the 1869 birth. The fact that two girls were named Susan (one born 1868, died 1868; the other born 1872, died 1872, gives a reason why Harriet used the middle name Susan, She had it engraved on a ring she always wore.

It seems pretty certain that Harriet served as godmother to the daughter of William J. Weekes and Mary Ann Leavy, Bridget Mary Weekes (who later went by the name Bertha).
This is a record from Ballybricken Parish.
The addresses and Dates of Births correspond to those recorded in the Civil
Records.

According to the 1900 U.S. census Patrick Gore emigrated with his mother, Catherine, in 1886.Harriet stayed behind probably until Patrick had earned enough in the U.S. to bring her over. Harriet emigrated in 1888.

Patrick Gore, their first son emigrated in 1894 when he was 8 years old. Mary Gore emigrated in 1893 when she was 9 years old.

Although mary is listed on the census as their oldest child it is not evident that she was actually the birth daughter of Patrick and Harriet.

The census records indicate that Patrick Gore Sr. was naturalized before 1900. He worked as a weaver in a woolens mill. Mary also worked as a weaver. Their son Patrick worked in a woolens mill as a "mule tender" A mule is a device for spinning wool.

The family lived in Sommerset county, NJ. In 1900 they lived on 2nd Street, in Raritan, NJ. In 1920 they lived at 35 West 2nd Street, Bound Brook, N.J. This is in central N.J. midway between Princeton and Newark. Patrick Sr. died in an accident in 1909.

Harriet Gore lived her final years with her daughter, Elizabeth Gore Maher, in Roselle NJ. Elizabeth's daughter Betty has very fond memories of Harriet. Betty said that she gave Harriet her first cigarette when Harriet was in her seventies. Harriet repaid Betty by giving the teenager her first taste of whiskey.

Harriet is burried in the Gore cemetary plot in Bound Brook.

N.B.Joe Weeks (1885-1915) also in same plot.
Joe is possibly the male Weekes born to T. Patrick W. & Anne Davis in
1886

Notes on Weeks Family Connections:
Harriet can be seen in a photo (provided by Rita Briggs) at the final vows ceremony for Catherine Weeks (Sister Mary Cletus). She came by train (ca. 1929) to James Weeks home in Northeast Phila. she stayed with them for a few days and drove out to Immaculata with them.

She visited Michael and Catherine Weeks from time to time. Her son Patrick joined the Navy. He probably met his wife Mary near Quantico, Virginia. He eventually became a chief petty officer, and Mary Weeks Pecoraio remembers him visiting her parents (in uniform) frequently around World War II. He was about the same age as Michael Weeks Sr. and would probably have a lot in common with him since they both spent their early years in Ireland.
