According to the Mackie Family Bible and census information, Ann was born in Stewarton in 1842, but her birth cannot be found there.

Buried at Hogganfield Loch Cemetery in the north of Glasgow.

Sophia Fraser refused to bury Andrew Rodger at Hogganfield Loch with his mother because Glasgow's plague victims had been buried there.

1. James Wylie Mackie (Dye-works Labourer, Bookkeeper, Author) was born on the 19th of February and christened on the 24th of June 1832 in Stewarton, Scotland and married on the 28th of August 1871 in Woodstock, Windham, Connecticut to Helen Amelia Goodell and again on the 6th of January 1887 in Buena Vista?, Tulare County, California to Nellie Pierce.  Helen Amelia Goodell was born on the 12th of April 1845 in West Woodstock, CN to Lorenzo Dow Goodell and Aves Amelia Leonard and died on the 16th of August 1886 at age 41.  James died in Fabiola Hospital, Oakland, California on the 2nd of July 1898 and was buried in Tulare cemetery.  He died from surgical shock from an operation for a stone in the bladder.

• William Wylie Mackie (Agronomist) was born on the 24th of July 1873 in San Francisco, San Francisco, California and married in ____ in ____ to Julia Adeline Manchester.  William died in California on the 7th of February 1947, survived by his wife Julia.  William was a professor of Agronomy at the University of Berkeley, California.  An internet search for "W.W. Mackie" will reveal numerous facts about his work.  "William Wylie Mackie was born in San Francisco July 24, 1873. His father was born in Scotland, and his mother in Connecticut. When William was twelve or thirteen years old the family moved from San Francisco to a farm in Tulare County. There were two other children, a younger brother and sister. The father, James W. Mackie, had been a prolific writer on philosophical, educational, and religious subjects; but he was interested in the farm only as a good place to rear his sons. At the age of fourteen, therefore, William left school and, until the age of twenty-five, he managed the farm and thus supported the rest of the family. By that time the younger children were able to care for themselves and William could give attention to his own education. This early experience in practical farming had a profound effect on his future interests and sympathies.", University of California.  See a complete biography for William.
• Maud Leonard Mackie was born on the 2nd of October 1875 in Oakland, Alameda, California and married in ____ in ____ to Charles Herbert Wright.  Maud may have died in California in 1954.
• Loren Goodell Mackie (Clerk) was born on the 7th of October 1877 in Oakland, California and married on the 18th of January 1916 in Merced, Merced, California to Marjorie Mirabelle Wood.  Marjorie was born on the 7th of January 1888 in Merced, California to Mirabeau Dallas Wood and Maron Love England.  They lived at 3115 Wheeler Street in Berkeley.  Loren and Marjorie are mentioned in a recent article about this house.  Loren died on the 13th of January 1940 in Berkeley, California, survived by his wife Marjorie.

James, and later other members of his  family, converted to the Mormon religion. He traveled to Salt Lake City in 1855 but became disenchanted with the elders there, left the church and moved on to San Francisco in the 1860s.

James sailed from Liverpool to Philadelphia on the LDS ship Juventa.



Michael Ward of San Jose, California has obtained copies of some of James's letters back home to his parents in Scotland in 1865-66 explaining to his parents why he left the church. Michael has done some very interesting research on James's life in America and plans to publish the letters and James's story on the web in the near future. I won't try to cover this information here but will add a link to Michael's work as soon as it becomes available.

By 1880, James has moved to Oakland, has a wife, three children and three servants. Around 1885 or 1886 he left Oakland for Buena Vista in Tulare County, California.

In 1886, James's first wife Helen dies and the following year he gets married to a Nellie Pierce.

In the TULARE COUNTY GREAT REGISTER OF 1890 and 1898, James and his two sons are recorded as residing in Buena Vista.  The 1898 register includes...

2. David Mackie born on the 30th August and christened on 1st September 1833 in Stewarton.  David does not appear with the family in the 1841 census.

David may have married a Janet Borland in Kilmarnock in 1855.  Son, William, born in 1857 in Kilmarnock.  Check this with 1881 census index.
 

3. Thomas Mackie was born on the 13th of November and christened on the 23rd of November 1834 in Stewarton.  Thomas does not appear with the family in the 1841 census.

Thomas may have married a Mary Ann C. H. Dickie in Stewarton in 1860.  Check this with the 1881 census index.
 

4. Jean Mackie (Bonnet Knitter) was born on the 30th of June and christened on the 24th of July 1836 in Stewarton.  According to Mormon church records, Jean may have died in 1861.  Origins reports a Jean Mackie dying in Stewarton in 1861.

Mary Mackie was born on the 15th of March 1844 and married on the 30th of May 1862 in Central District, Glasgow, Lanarkshire to Alexander Craig (Coachman).  Alexander was born in 1841 in Stewarton to a James and Elizabeth Craig of Ireland.  Alexander became a coachman at Arthurlie Lodge, Nielston.
   
   • James Craig was born on the 16th of November 1862 in Stewarton.  This James must have died as a boy.
   • Janet Mackie Craig was born on the 2nd of April 1864 in Stewarton.
   • Elizabeth Spencer Craig (Pupil Teacher) was born on the 24th of March 1866 in Stewarton.
   • William Craig was born on the 10th of August 1868 in Stewarton.
   • Thomas Craig was born on the 27th of March 1874 in Blythswood, Glasgow.

8. Elizabeth Mackie was born on the 22nd of January 1846 and married on the 11th of June 1869 in Stewarton to William Renton (Foreman Gas Works).  William was born in 1842/43 in Kilwinning.
   • Jessie Clark Renton was born on the 18th of December 1869 in Stewarton.  Not present in the 1881 census.
   • George Renton was born on the 1st of November 1871 in Stewarton.
   • William Renton was born on the 21st of April 1874 in Kilmarnock.  Not present in the 1881 census.

Elizabeth was a witness at Ann Mackie's wedding in 1864.

9. Caterine Paisley Mackie was born on the 9th of March 1848 and died on the 11th of May 1849.  Caterine is named after her great grandmother Cathrine Paisley of Kirkmaiden By Drummore in Wigtownshire.
   
   
10. Andrew Mackie was born on December 18th 1849 and married on the 29th of January 1869 in Kilwinning to Mary Holden.  Andrew is mentioned in Stewarton Mormon Church records.

11. William Mackie was born on May 20th 1852.  Mentioned in Mormon Church records.
    Records of the Stewarton Mormon church indicate that William died of consumption on the 14th of September 1873.  Origins reports a 21 year old William Mackie dying in Stewarton in 1873.

Plump, quiet and intelligent. One photo survives.

When Sarah Rodger, Ann's granddaughter, was born in 1921, she tucked a gold chain and mounted gold sovereign into her hand. This was stolen in a robbery in 1996 in Dumfries, but was recovered by police and returned to Sarah.
