1. Walter Lyles was born on the 30th of March and christened on 22nd April 1839 in Newhaven.  It is assumed that Walter died young, as a second Walter was born in 1858.

Walter Son of Walter Lyles, Fisherman, Newhaven & Isabella Ramsay, his spouse, was born 30th March 1839 & baptized 22nd April 1839.
 

2. Isabella Lyles (House Servant) was born on the 2nd of January 1841 and christened on 4th February 1841 in Newhaven, and married on the 21st of September 1860 in Newhaven to James Comb (Fisherman).  James was born to John Comb and Grace Christie on the 30th of November 1839 in Newhaven and died in Newhaven in 1873 at age 33.

Isabella daughter of Walter Lyles, Fisherman, Newhaven, Isabella Ramsay his Spouse was born 2nd January 1841 & baptized 4 February 1841.
 

• John Comb (General Labourer) was born on the 3rd of October 1861 in Newhaven.  John may have married an Elizabeth Robertson in 1884, or a Janet Cruickshanks in 1889, or a Mary McQueenie in 1893.  John did not marry an Annie Goodall in 1889 (source: Ian Abernethy).
• Walter Lyle Comb (General Labourer) was born on the 7th of September 1863 in Newhaven.  Walter may have married a Mary O'Shaughnessy in 1890.
• Isabella Lyall Comb was born on the 31st of July 1865 in Newhaven.  Isabella may have married a James Connell in 1885, or a Francis Comb in 1892, or an Adam Colvin in 1895.
• Grace Christie Comb was born on the 5th of May 1867 in Newhaven and married in 1889 in Newhaven to John Thompson.
• Catherine Ramsay Comb (twin) was born on the 10th of January 1869 in Newhaven and married in 1890 in Newhaven to Charles Henry Fletcher.
• Jemima Comb (twin) was born on the 10th of January 1869 in Newhaven but died as a baby the same year.
• James Comb was born on the 27th of September 1871 in Newhaven.  James may have married a Catherine Liston in Newhaven in 1895 and may have died in 1897 at the age of 25.

 
3. William Lyles (Fisherman) was born on the 18th of January and christened on 13th February 1843 in Newhaven, and married on the 7th of October 1864 to Margaret Beveridge.  William signed his father's, Walter Lyles's, death certificate in 1868.  Margaret was born on the 28th of June 1841 in Newhaven to Alexander Beveridge and Margaret McIntosh.

• Margaret McIntosh Lyle was born on the 27th of August 1865 in Newhaven but died in 1866 at age 0.
• Walter Lyle (Errand Boy) was born on the 30th of January 1867 in Newhaven.  Walter may have died in 1889 in South Leith at age 22, or he may have married a Robina Linton Carnie in Newhaven in 1896.
• Isabella Ramsay Lyle was born on the 19th of July 1868 in Newhaven.  Isabella may have married an Alexander Skivington in Newhaven in 1888.
• Alexander "Sandy" Beveridge Lyle was born on the 10th of September 1870 in Newhaven, and married on the 6th of June 1890 in Newhaven to Margaret Barbara Philips.  Photo of Sandy courtesy of Lyle Booth (descendant).  They lived at 29 Lower Granton Road.  Margaret was born on the 25th of April 1872 in Leith, Midlothian to Joseph Philip and Jane Hogg.  Alexander's nickname was "Sandy Cockatoo".  He worked at Granton Gas Works where he retired in 1935.

  • Joe Lyle.  Joe also worked at Granton Gas Works, like his father.  His nickname was "Black Bess" because he was very dark haired and was known for a dour visage.

  • Cissie Lyle married Alex Stupart, who may have been bootmaker to the King.
• Elizabeth Brotchie Cockburn Lyle was born on the 4th of November 1872 in Newhaven.  Elizabeth may have married a James Flucker in Newhaven in 1893.
• William Lyle was born on the 10th of November 1874 in Newhaven.
• James Lyle was born in 1877/78 in Newhaven.  James may have died in Newhaven in 1896 at age 19.
• Sarah Lyle was born in 1879/80 in Newhaven.

 
4. Euphemia Lyles (Fisherwoman) was born on the 10th August 1845 in Newhaven and married on the 18th of October 1867 in Newhaven to John Butler (Vanman, Carter Journeyman).  John was born in 1848 to William Butler (Soldier 92nd Regiment) and Elizabeth Fraser.  His mother died when John was only 4 years of age, and John was fostered by a Mrs. Edgecock.  John died in 1901.

• William Hedgecock Butler was born on the 28th of August 1868 in Leith.
• Martha Fraser Butler was born on the 28th of January 1870 in Leith and married in North Leith in 1887 to James Thomson.  Martha died in 1958.  They had a large family, lost 8 of them in infancy, and 8 survived to old age.
• Eliza Bishop Butler was born on the 12th of May 1872 in Leith and married in 1893 to James Auld.  They had three children.
• Isabella Ramsay Butler was born on the 6th of November 1874 in Leith and married on the 13th of April 1894 to Thomas McKenzie, and married again in ____ to Thomas Carse.  Isabella died on the 2nd of August 1959.

  • Mary B. McKenzie was married to George Gisiterri.   "George & Mary owned the fish & chip shop at the end of the Main St.  George died, I think, in the early 1960's and Mary in the 1980s.  She had a brother John who remained a bachelor, and he was murdered in his home by thieves in the 1970s.  There was another brother William, who I think was also a bachelor", Joyce Wood.
• Walter Lyle Butler was born in 1877 and married in 1898 to Jeanie Braid.  (twin)
• Euphemia Butler was born in 1877, but died the same year.  (twin)
• John Hedgecock Butler was born in 1880, but died in 1888 age 8.
• James Robertson Butler was born in 1882 and married in 1901 in St. Giles, Edinburgh to Jane O'Neill.  Jane was a catholic and an outsider to Newhaven, and was never accepted by the Newhaven people.  When her husband went to the First World War, she had a hard time to survive.  She would search for mussels on the beach and bait the fishing lines to earn some money.  Jane is the woman on the left in the photo on page 143 of "Newhaven on Forth: Port of Grace" where the Butler family are baiting the fishing lines.

  • Euphemia Lyle Butler was born in 1905, but died of gastroenteritis at 6 weeks of age.
  • Albert Lyle Hodges was born in 1924.
  • Jean Phyllis Baptie Hodges was born in 1926.

• Euphemia Butler was born on the 23rd of March 1886 in ____ and married in ____ to ____ Ormiston.
• Williamina Tough Butler was born in 1890 and married in ____ in Dunoon to David Adam.  Williamina died of the Spanish flu at age 28.
  
  
5. Catharine Lyles was born on the 8th December 1847 in Newhaven, and married on the 26th of May 1871 to James Carnie (Fisherman).

• Robert Carnie was born on the 29th of February 1872 in Newhaven.
• Walter Lyle Carnie was born on the 18th of August 1874 in Newhaven and married in 1900 in Newhaven to Jessie Rutherford Flucker.
• Isabella Carnie was born around 1875/76 in Newhaven.

 
6. Margaret Lyles (Fish Hawker) was born on the 8th of November and christened on the 25th of December 1849 in Newhaven and married on the 8th of October 1875 in Newhaven to James Flucker (Fisherman).  (Verify this marriage).  James was born on the 31st of May 1850 in Newhaven to James Flucker and Grant Blyth.

7. Elizabeth Lyles was born on the 5th of March 1852 and christened on the 27th of April 1852 in Newhaven, and married in 1878 in Newhaven to David Graham Flucker.

 
8. Walter Lyles born on 26th August 1858 in Newhaven.  Looks like the first Walter died and a second child was named Walter.  Walter may have married a Barbara J. Wilson in 1877, or a Mary Wood Flucker on the 14th of October 1881, or a Robina Linton Carnie in 1896.

"Dad (Magnus Flucker, son of Combe Flucker)  spent a lot of time with his grandparents. Because his mother died when he was so tiny , he was brought up at first with his Granny Lyle ( she was still called that as well as Flucker ) and his Granda Flucker although he also spent time with his Granny and Granda Liston. As well as that , Combe's sisters Auntie Maggie and Auntie Belle also helped look after Dad. Apparently Granny Lyle used to make big clootie dumplings and she would let them grow cold and keep them in big slices in a drawer in the living room and Dad would get one when he came in from school which he loved.  When Combe married again and Anna was born , Dad stopped staying at his Granny and Granda Flucker and moved back with Combe and his new wife. However , he would still go round to his Granny's after school to get his slice of clootie dumpling. When I was checking out your website , I noticed that David Graham Flucker and Elizabeth Lyle lived at 102 Main Street although their address when they died was Ramsay Street. I presume that Combe must have moved into 102 Main Street because that was Dad's address on his Marriage Certificate. The only other thing that I can tell you just now is that Dad spoke of running up to his Uncle David's at Bonnington Grove ( your Granda) and getting things for his Granny from him. Again , if any more memories surface then I'll let you know. Granny Lyle was supposed to be a strong , loyal , kind and generous person.", Alexandra and David Flucker.
