FATAL ACCIDENT - On Monday morning a melancholy accident, which afterwards proved fatal, happened to Mr. Andrew Fraser, master slater, 21 Holmes Street, at the Parish Halls.  He was engaged in the repair of the roof, and was standing on the top step of a 30 feet ladder when it gave way and he fell heavily to the ground.  Previous to being taken home, he was carried into the house of Mr. Love, the janitor of the halls, and Dr. Lennox, who was called, found that his left arm was fractured near the elbow and that he had sustained other severe injuries.  Being sixty-eight years of age, the shock to his system was very great, and he died early the following morning.  Deceased was an old townsman, hard-working, and industrious.  He is survived by a widow and family.

Andrew Fraser (Slater and Plasterer) was born in 1823/24 in Hamilton and married on the 3rd of May 1846 in Glasgow to Jane Hose (Tambourer) and later married on the 8th of April 1867 in Hamilton to Helen "Ellen" McClair.  Ellen McClure was born on the 24th of January 1847 in Bothwell. Her parents were John McClure and Mary Penman.  Ellen died on the 22nd of March 1896 in Hamilton at age 48. 
2. Mary Fraser (Domestic Servant) was born in 1825/26 in Hamilton and married on the 27th of August 1848 in Hamilton to John Craig (Cotton Weaver, Stone Breaker and Road Labourer).
• Ann Craig (Domestic Servant) was born in 1853/54 in Hamilton.
• John Craig was born in 1855/56 in Hamilton.
• Andrew Craig (Stone Breaker) was born in 1858/59 in Hamilton.
• Mary Craig was born in 1861/62 in Hamilton.  Mary may have been an unmarried farm servant in Hyndfordwell, West Linton, Peebleshire in 1881.
• James Craig (Road Labourer) was born on the 23rd of November 1864 in Hamilton.
• Thomas Craig was born in 1868/69 in Hamilton.

4. Margaret Fraser was born in 1831/32 in Hamilton.
5. John Fraser was born in 1834/35 in Hamilton, and may have married a Mary Ann Blunt on the 17th of June 1861 in Hamilton. (verify this family)

Thomas Fraser (Labourer) was born in 1839/40 in Hamilton and married on the 10th of May 1869 in Saint John the Baptist, Shoreditch, London to Harriet Sheldrake.  Harriet was born in 1841/42 in Ipswich.  Thomas Fraser died on the 14th of July 1901 at 97 Almada Street, Hamilton, at age 61.  A Harriet Fraser died in Hamilton in 1924 at age 82.

• Thomas Fraser (Labourer) was born in 1872/73 in Brooklyn, New York.
• James Fraser (Apprentice Tinsmith) was born in 1874/75 in Brooklyn, New York.
• Harriet Fraser was born in 1877 in Hamilton and was married on the 20th of August 1902 in ____ to William Alexander McClure.  Harriett emigrated to the US with her son Alfred.
  • Alfred Bruce McClure was born in 1904 in ____ and married in December 1930 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA to Edytha Grace Edgerly.  Alfred died in 1974.  Edytha was born in 1910 and died in 2003.
• Emma Fraser was born in 1879/80 in Furnace, Argyle.
• Mathew Fraser was born in 1882 in Hamilton.
• Charles Fraser was born in 1885 in Hamilton.  A Charles Fraser died in Hamilton in 1901 at age 15.
8. William Fraser was born in 1844/45 in Hamilton. William died on the 29th of May 1869 at 17 Almada Street, Hamilton at the age of 24.

Mathew Hamilton Fraser (Builder Journeyman, Baker Journeyman, Private 79th Foot, Stone Mason) was born in 1847/48 in Hamilton, was married on the 15th of December 1865 in Hamilton to Elizabeth Taylor (Tambourer), and married again in 1885 in ____ to Mary Whyte (Greengrocer) of Kirkton, Blantyre.  Elizabeth was born around 1846/47 in Hamilton to Janet A. Taylor (Confection Worker).  At the time of her marriage, she lived at 42 Muir Street, Hamilton.  She died of Phthisis Pulmonalis on the 8th of February 1884 at 4 Beckford Street, Hamilton at age 37, and is buried in the Bent Cemetery, Hamilton.  Mary Whyte was born around 1847 in Blantyre.  In 1891 Mathew and Mary lived at 85 Whitehill Road, Hamilton with son Donald, age 15.  "In 1873, Matthew is listed as being a private in the '79th Foot'. This Regiment is known as the "Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders" and the Regimental HQ was at Hamilton Barracks", David Fraser (descendant).  Mathew died on the 16th of April 1927 at 4 Saffronhall Crescent, Hamilton, at the age of 79.  
• Andrew Fraser was born on the 18th of December 1865 in Hamilton.  Andrew is believed to have died as a baby in 1866.
• Mathew Hamilton Fraser (Apprentice, Coal Miner, Draper, Confectioner) was born on the 11th of February 1867 at 67 Muir Street, Hamilton and was married on the 29th of March 1893 at Blackswell Hall, Hamilton to Mary Turner.  Mary had red hair and was born about 1870 in Yorkshire.  A Mary Fraser died in 1909 in Hamilton at age 39, and another in 1913 at age 42.  "The 1891 census shows Jane Taylor living with her grandson Matthew H. Fraser at 6 Burnside Lane, Hamilton. It is interesting that Matthew was living with his grandmother when his parents were alive and well, living at 85 Whitehill Road, Hamilton.  It is also interesting that Jane's occupation is given as Confection Worker in the 1891 Census, and by 1898 Matthew had switched occupations to Confectioner (via coal miner, draper). In 1920 his occupation was given as Confectioner (Master).  He went on to own a wholesale and retail confectioner's business with a fleet of vans. The shop was based in the ground floor of the flats building which he also owned in Springwells, Blantyre.  The building is listed in the 1881 census as "Fraser's building" and had 12 families then.", David Fraser (descendant).

  • Mathew Hamilton Fraser (Shopkeeper) was born on the 6th of December 1895 in Springwell Place, Blantyre, and was married in ____ to Mary Unknown.   "Lived in Paisley and latterly in Largs.  Opened a sweetie shop/dairy in the west-end of Paisley.  Won a very high military medal in World War I : He held the line with a machine gun when all others around him were dead, until reinforced. He never spoke of this", David Fraser (descendant).

  • Mary Turner Fraser was born around July 1897 but died on the 8th of September 1897 in Springwell Place, Blantyre while still a baby.
  • William Hamilton Fraser (Plumber) was born on the 31st of August 1898 in Springwell Place, Blantyre and was married on the 31st of August 1920 in Hamilton to Elizabeth Syme Millar (Tailoress of gents' suits).  William died on the 30th of December 1967 at age 69.  Elizabeth was born on the 8th of August 1898 in Hamilton and died on the 20th of November 1988 at Strathclyde Hospital in Motherwell.
    • Mathew Millar Fraser (Explosives, Chemicals, Sergeant British Army WWII) was born on the 8th of February 1922 in Uddingston.  He died in South Africa around 1956.  "He worked in bomb disposal on the continent in the Second World War - ended up as sergeant.  Second in command of South Africa Explosives and Chemicals (a subsidiary of ICI) and the biggest factory in Africa", David Fraser.

• Jemima Taylor Fraser was born on the 31st of December 1868 in Hamilton and died on the 18th of November 1873 in Hamilton at age 4.  She died after suffering smallpox for 12 days.

In this census, Jane Fraser is listed as "Blind or Deaf and Dumb". It is highly likely that Jane was deaf, and that this is the explanation why her maiden surname is always different every time it is listed. A real mystery solved!
