Second Marriage:

Janet emigrated to the USA in the 1870s and married for the second time on the 31st of October 1877 in St. George Temple, Washington, Utah to Walter Granger.  St. George's Temple was completed in 1877 and Janet's wedding would have been among the first in the temple.  Brigham Young, who had a winter home in St. George, also died that same year.

Walter was born on the 4th of August 1821 in Edinburgh, Scotland to Robert Sandilands Granger and Catherine McDonald.  Walter first married Catharine Guthrie in 1841 in Paisley, Renfrewshire.  Catherine was born in Pasley in 1819.  Janet was his second wife.  He married his third wife, Anna Christiana Ernestine Keil in 1883 in St. George, Washington, Utah.  Anna was born in Bogendorf, Schlesien, Prussia in 1862.   Walter died on the 6th of May 1904 in St. George, Washington, Utah.  He is buried in St. George Cemetery along with his first wife and two of their children who died in the 1860s.  Walter was a bishop in the LDS Church in St. George.

Walter Granger was one of several Mormon missionaries in Scotland, released in 1855 to travel to Utah.  This was the same year that Janet's son, James Wylie Mackie, also headed for Utah from Stewarton.

In the 1880 census in St. George Walter is living with his first wife and some of their children, but Janet is not listed in the same household.  Either it was a marriage of convenience, or Janet was in hiding because of the polygamy laws.

In 1878, Janet's mother was baptized posthumously into the Mormon church, presumably by Janet.  Janet's first husband, William McKie, appears not to have converted.

In 1888, Walter Granger was serving in the Utah Penitentiary for "unlawful cohabitation".  I am guessing that this was the period when they were trying to outlaw polygamy, and also why Janet Clark is with her son in California when she dies in 1891.

Walter Granger's son, Walter Keil Granger (1888-1978), became the Speaker of the House of Representatives in Utah in 1935-36, and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1940 until 1952.

Died on the 13th of December 1891 in Tulare, California.  Presumably living at the time with her eldest son, James Wylie Mackie.

Other Comments

From James Wylie Mackie's letters from America, it appears that William and Janet followed their son's example and converted to the Mormon religion in 1855. James received the news from his parents when he arrived in Salt Lake City in November 1855. James was quite upset that he had influenced his parents in this way. James was a very committed member of the Mormon faith when he left Stewarton, but by the time he reached Salt Lake City he had become very disillusioned by the behavior of the elders of the Mormon Church. In 1865, in a series of letters to his parents, James wrote a wonderfully descriptive account of his journey from his home town to Salt Lake City and of his gradual disillusionment with his chosen faith.

Referred to as "Jane S. Mackie" at her daughter Ann's wedding.  Not sure what the "S" stands for.  It is never used anywhere else.
