Other Comments

From James Wylie Mackie's letters from America, it appears that William and Janet followed their son's example and converted to the Mormon religion in 1855. James received the news from his parents when he arrived in Salt Lake City in November 1855. James was quite upset that he had influenced his parents in this way. James was a very committed member of the Mormon faith when he left Stewarton, but by the time he reached Salt Lake City he had become very disillusioned by the behavior of the elders of the Mormon Church. In 1865, in a series of letters to his parents, James wrote a wonderfully descriptive account of his journey from his home town to Salt Lake City and of his gradual disillusionment with his chosen faith.
