Homes and Schools

Occupation

Hobbies and Interests

Loved practical jokes and playing cards.

Always concerned with her family, Gert was often compared to a "mother hen".

Loved knitting and needlework. Sat up until all hours.

Went to night school for upholstery and dressmaking.

Other Comments

Always chuckling and having a laugh.

Gert was only seven years old when her mother, Rosa, died. She was raised by Fanny Osborne who was at first the housekeeper and later her step-mother.

Gert's father, William Young, brought Harry Miles and his mate home after meeting them at the Cobden Arms. Harry took Grace out, but eventually married Gert.

Full of fun. Loved going out on an outing.

Gert's sister Gladys was sent to a private girl's school in Bournemouth to work when her mother died. Got sister Grace into domestic service in Bournemouth in her late teens. Then Gert joined them in Bournemouth. Since Harry came from Bournemouth, was it just coincidence that they met in Havant, or had they known each other before??

Very strict as a mother.

Husband Harry was away at sea for three to four years at a time sometimes. When he came home, the youngest would already be quite old. The children were quite frightened of this stranger when he came home. Joyce used to hide in the coal cellar.

Gert was as talkative as Harry was quiet!

Very interested in her children and their families. Used to visit each of her five children each week. Always visited each on the same day in a regular pattern.
