Promoted to Sergeant Major 11 July 1861. Commissioned a Lieutenant in Sept. 1861. Ordered to detached service with the Signal Corps in Dec. 1861 where he served until the end of the war. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant 3 Mar 1863. Promoted to Captain and Major by Brevet. Member of the State House of Rep. 1887-1892. Served as Speaker 1891-2. Elected as a Republican to the 55th thru the 61st Congress' (4 Mar 1897-3 Mar 1911). Did not run for re-election in 1910. Returned to Stillwater and resumed his former activities. Buried in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, RI.8 During his Military Service he: Enlisted as a Sergeant on 06 June 1861
