Taught school at nite for a while. At age 18 he began to study medicene with Dr. Levi Wheaton of Providence. He attended a course of medical lectures in Boston, and also at the medical school connected with the Brown Univ, the lectureres there also taught at Harvard. He opened his own practive in 1823 in North Providence. Graduated an M.D. from Brown Univ. in 1824, advocating in this thesis the use of opium in dysentery. He moved to Providence in 1835. He generally practiced obstetric. Gained a wide reputation and attended nearly 8,000 labors. Elected member of the RI Med. Soc. in 1824. Served as second and first vice presidents and as president. Wrote several books and papers. Served briefly at Hampton Roads during the war. He remarried in June 1876.
