     Biographical Notes for Thomas Hanscom: His father (John) died when he was still young and he and his sister Joan apparently moved to nearby Sutton, Bedfordshire with their widowed mother. In March 1628/9, Richard and Joan (Hanscom) Clayton applied with the Massachusetts Bay Company for permission to emigrate to America. Included in the group was Joan's younger brother Thomas. Records reveal they left from England on the ship 'Talbot' in May 1629, and arrived in Salem, MA on 29 June 1629. Thomas Hanscombe's name is seen on Salem Tax Lists in 1630. Soon after, he returned to his hometown of Shillington, Bedfordshire. The reasons for his return are unknown. He married soon after returning to England.
