Allen Weston Capron, Jr.
April 15, 1921 – Aug. 28, 2011
Allen Weston Capron of Beaverton, a former Wallowa County resident, died Aug. 28, 2011, at the age of 90 after a sudden illness at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland.
Allen was born in Scotts Bluff, Neb., to Allen Weston and Maurine Elizabeth Thomas Capron, the first of three sons. He lived primarily in Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, California and Oregon. Being a "Jr.", he was known as Wes for most of his life, until 1994 when he insisted upon being called Allen.
He served two tours during WWII and beyond in the Army Air Corps as a flight crew chief overseeing maintenance of bomber and fighter squadrons.
He met his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Kingsley Capron, in the hold of a cargo plane, when Dorothy, an Army nurse, was being ferried back to her station in Biloxi, Miss., after treating flu epidemic patients at Lowry Field in Colorado, where Allen was stationed. They were married by a Justice of the Peace in Gulfport, Miss., in July 1947.
He moved to St. Helens, Ore., in 1963 and worked as a machine oiler for Boise Cascade paper mill.
In 1978, Allen's love of horses brought the couple to a small ranch near Enterprise. The Caprons cherished the time they spent together there. In 1985, after the birth of a grandchild, they moved back to the west side of the state, first to St. Paul, then to Tigard, and finally to Beaverton.
He loved to read Louis L'Amour novels, American history and books about Native Americans. His numerous letters to family and friends were always headed by an appropriate Bible verse. He was a member of King City Lions for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; four of his children, David (Victoria) Capron of Washougal, Wash; Donald (Linda) Capron of Redmond, Wash., Cheryl Klingenberg of Beaverton, and Joyce (Will) Eaton of Eugene; brother Merlyn Capron of Reno, Nev; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by Susan Kay Capron Totten (Allen's daughter from a youthful first marriage to Fordyce Ireland), and brother Leonard Capron.
Interment with full military honors will be given at Willamette National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept 9, 2011. A memorial service will be held at Tigard Christian Church, Tigard, Ore., at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept 17, 2011.
