Horace Capron, Jr. was born on 27 October 1839 in Laurel, Prince George's, Maryland. He was the son of Horace Capron and Louisa Victoria Snowden. Horace Capron, Jr. died on 24 February 1864 at age 24 in Cedar Grove, Davidson, North Carolina.
During his Military Service he: He served with Company C of the 8th Illinois Cavalry during the Civil war and received the Medal of Honor for "conspicuous bravery in the field." Horace was killed in an engagement with the Cherokee Indians at Cedar Grove, NC, Feb 2, 1864. Alber t was riding at his side when it happened and he took over the company to finish the battle.
Biographical Notes for Horace Capron, Jr.: This brief biography is from the Regimental History of the 14th Illinois Cavalry: "First Lieutenant Horace Capron, born at Laurel factory, Maryland, October 26th, 1842; brought up to farming; emigated to McHenry county, Illinois, 1852; moved to Pe oria county, where he enlisted in Company "G," 8th Illinois Cavalry, August, 1861, as a private; was promoted corporal, then 1st sergeant, and received a bronze medal for capturing a rebel flag. The medal had this inscription: "The Congress to 1 st Sergeant Horace Capron, Jr., Company "G," 8th Illinois Cavalry, for gallant conduct at Chickahoming and Ashland, June, 1862." He was discharged for promotion November 17th, 1862, and was mustered as 1st lieutenant Company "A," 14th Regiment Il linois Cavalry, January 7th, 1863. He was always with his company, and often in command. He had a horse shot under him in a brisk fight in upper East Tennessee. He led Company "A" in the Indian fight February 2d, 1864, near Quallatown, N. C., an d in a gallant charge upon a party of the Indians, was mortally wounded. With other wounded, he was transported over the mountains, at first in a heavy lumber wagon, which was exchanged for a carriage, in which he was taken to Knoxville, Tennesse e, where he died February 6th, 1864. His remains were sent to his Illinois home, and buried with the honors of war. In his death the regiment lost one of its finest line officers, who gave great promise of high distinction in the cavalry service . He was highly esteemed by all who knew him, and especially by his company comrades." During his Military Service he: Entered the Army as a private during the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. G, 8th Illinois Cavalry at the formation of the regiment. As a Sergeant he fought many hard battles on the Peninsula. For outstanding bravery he was promoted brevet 2nd Lieutenant on the field. After being commissioned to 1st Lieutenant of Company A, he was mortally wounded. One of the officers of his regiment stated that, 'with revolver in one hand and a sabre in the other, he would dash from the ranks into the thickest of the fight, and push on, leaving the dead and wounded on either side. He knew no fear and he hated slavery and treason with such intensity, that on the battlefield he had the heart of a lion and the arm of a giant.' He was picked as one of six from his regiment to receive the 'Medal of Honor'.
