These death notices came from the Brinkley Argus. In this newspaper, at least during this
particular time period, each surrounding community had sections in the paper for news and 
gossip. And each community had a name for these gossip columns, which I'm including with each 
notice. Most of these death notices came from those sections - which is why I'm not calling 
them obits. I do have an OBITS page, though.

I'm putting the dates of the newspaper articles and not the actual death dates.  
Also, I've tried to stay true to the articles - I don't change spelling and, for the most 
part, I don't change punctuation unless I feel it's truly needed.  Sometimes a lack of
correct punctuation can make an article difficult to read.
And finally, this particular page is complete.  I've found all the death notices I can find in 
the Brinkley Argus from 1896-1898.  It won't be updated anymore.

Monday morning. He was the father of Mrs. Frank Barrow.

illness of three or four weeks.

Blackton's Blinkings - Wm. BALLARD, an old citizen, died near here Friday night of hematuria. 
He leaves a wife and five grown children.

Local/Brinkley Died: Little Gladys BEAT was transplanted by the death angel to the happy
"Land of the Leal(?)" from her mother's home October 13th. She was the pride and joy of her 
home and will be sadly missed for many a day. The funeral services were impressively conducted 
at the cemetery by Rev. T.H. Howard.

Turner Paragraphs Died - at his home four miles north of Turner, the eveding[sic] of the 30th
ult., little Willie BLACKWOOD, the only surviving son of Mrs. Vachel Browning. We offer sincere
condolence. May God's grace prove sufficient in this hour of sorrow to the mother and relatives.

He died of hematuria which is as bad in effect as yellow fever if not worse. Little Green's
younger sister is also down with the same disease but Dr. Taylor reports her better.

Hunter Hummings  Died: Near Hunter, Ark., Jewell CANE, better known as "Baby Cane" age
10 months and 4 days. Little Jewell was sick a long time and all that fond parents, relatives 
and friends could do was done, but all to no avail. Her work on earth was ended and she obeyed 
the summons to come up higher. To the bereaved parents and friends, we would say weep not as 
tho' you had no hope, Jewell is safe with Him "who doeth all things well".

Roe's Budget - We note with regret the death of Miss Emma CHURCH on Saturday morning, the
25th ult. She had been sick for several days, supposed to be the result of eating green fruit. 
She was convalescing when she relapsed and died very suddenly. The remains were carried to 
Hunter Chapel cemetery for internment. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved parents.

Turner Paragraphs - Miss Laura Connelly, daughter of Mrs. Will Garner, living near Valley Grove
died September 11. She was a fair maiden, just on the threshold of young womanhood, whom all 
praised who knew her. Rev. M.J. Day conducted the funeral services. May the sorrowing relatives
be comforted by our Father in Heavan.

Clarendon News- Veto CORLOCK died last Friday. He had been sick only a short time with
pneumonia.

Miss Laura CORNELL of Hill's neighborhood, died last Thursday. She was taken sick one day and 
died the next. It was said by the doctors to be one of the most malignant cases of hemorrhage 
from the kidneys that they ever saw. She was taken with spasms and only lived a short while. 
Miss Laura had just entered womanhood and was a nice, pretty ? years. We offer heartfelt 
sympathy to the heartbroken mother.

Roe's Budget - Mrs. Sarah DUMM, the last of the first settlers in this section of the country
has been laid to rest near her husband in the family graveyard on the old homestead near 
Aberdeen. She came here early in the forties with her husband and they settled near Aberdeen 
where they lived until Mr. Dumm died, then she went to live with Mrs. Tom Jones. She was a true 
christian notwithstanding the fact that for many years she could not attend church on account 
of her old age. She died Monday October the 3rd. 98 and no doubt today she is resting in peace 
and far better off than she was in this world of sorrow and trouble.

Little Edna, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isom ECHOLS died at her home in Cotton Plant last 
Wednesday with diptheria. She was a sweet child, too pure for this sinful world and God saw fit

From Monroe Station - Mrs. John GRIMES, wife of one of our best citizens, died very 
suddenly on Sunday evening, September 4. She had a light chill on the day previous and had been
taking chill tonic and was thought to be well. She was sitting in a chair, Mr. Grimes was 
feeding his stock and her daughter, Bettie, was getting supper when she fell out of her chair 
dead. Dr. Gray was summoned, but all to no purpose. Mrs. Grimes was a devout Christian and in 
her death, the church lost a good worker, her husband a loving wife, and the children a tender 
mother which the world can never replace and the community one of the best neighbors. The 
bereaved ones have our profound sympthy.

More From Holly Grove - We are very sorry to learn of the death of Isaac HALPERN, on October
29 at his home in Clarendon. He came to Clarendon away back in the fifties, a poor man and 
lived in an old box for many years. This he abandoned for the spacious mansion in which he 
died. He was married twice, having married sisters, the Misses Peterson, whose brother, Jones 
Peterson, lives at Blackton. He leaves a wife and one child, Mrs. Johnson, formerly Mrs. 
Matthews. These with his grandson, young Matthews are the legal heirs. He is said to be worth 
$50,000 and to have lost as much dealing in futures and in bad investments within the past six 
or eight years.

Local/Brinkley - Died: yesterday afternoon at his father's home, John HENDERSON, son of Mr. and 
Mrs. Sam Henderson, died after a protracted illness. He was a worthy young man and leaves a wife
and child to mourn his death. He was a member of the Methodist Church. The funeral this morning
at Ash Grove was well attended by friends of the family. To the bereaved ones we extend sincere
sympathy.

morning.

Hunter Hummings  Died: Near Hunter the night of November ?, 1898, Elmoe HIGHT. He was 8 months
and 14 days old. His life was bright, but he was, Oh, so soon called away. To the bereaved ones 
we would say weep not, for we will all soon be with sweet little Elmoe in that land of pure de-
light and there'll be no parting there.

Rock Sunday, where it was buried.

Wheatley Items- Mr. A. LYONS who had a shock of paralasys[sic] about two years ago, had
another shock a few days ago, which rendered him unconscious, in which state he remained until
Sunday morning, when he expired. He had been in an almost helpless condition since the time of
the first shock about two years ago, and had been attended with great care and patience by his
wife. Mr. Lyons was a good man and a worthy citizen, highly esteemed by his friends. He leaves 
a wife, one son, and two daughters, Mrs. A. Diamond and Mrs. Weston, all of this place. The 
bereaved family has our deepest sympthy.

Local/Brinkley - Frank PARSLEY died at his home on West Walnut St Monday morning at 2:20 
o'clock, after an illness of seven weeks. The burial took place at the cemetery at 4:00 o'clock

two small children and an elder son. My He who doeth all things well, comfort them in their

drowning, one of their little boys. The little fellow was on a little "junk boat" and it seemed

Monday night and was buried in the Blackton grave yard Tuesday evening.

Local - Brinkley- It is with sadness that we learn of the death of master Roy, the eleven 
year old son of our clever and good friend, R.D. PLEDGER, which sad event occurred at mid-
night Tuesday at the home on Cypress Ridge.  The little fellow had been sick for several days 
and we had hoped that he would recover and bless the happy home for years to come with his 
bright and cheering presence but God had willed otherwise and the little fellow was called to 
a home in Heaven. The heartfelt sympathy of the writer goes out to the bereaved ones in their 
sad loss as the will of God.  It was Him who gave, and Him who took away.

Turner Paragraphs  Died: at 10:15 o'clock Wednesday night, October 26th, Mrs. Abi Pascal POPE,
wife of Rev. J.K. Pope, passed from a weary world of pain and suffering to the mansions in the 
skies. She had been an almost constant sufferer for several years and in her last illness of 
nine weeks, her suffering was most intense. Yet thro' it all she was patient and resigned. Her 
pure, strong christian life shown even brighter and clearer till she crossed the Mystic River. 
Just before her departure, she sang a hymn and praised God that she was "going home to suffer 
no more and to rest in the arms of Jesus forever more". Though our loss is irreparable and we 
are sorely grieved, soon we too will pass inside the gate, and live with her and Christ our 
Lord forever.

Black Ankle Notes  Died: Mrs. F.M. SAWYER after a lingering illness of almost a fortnight
passed quietly away. How sad to part with friends and loved ones, but oh! Who can express the
consolation that comes to the soul than can look up and say "The Lord giveth and the Lord 
taketh away, blessed be the name of the Lord". May the good Lord comfort the bereaved.

Born: to F.M. Sawyer, a baby girl. It, however, only budded on earth to bloom forth in eternal 
youth.
After three days of terrestial life, its spirit winged its way to the unseen realms above, to 
join the Angel Band. And in all probability, the mother will join her sweet babe in glory land, 
before this appears in print, as her case has been pronounced hopeless, by the doctor.

Turner Paragraphs- Died at 6:00 o'clock March 23rd at his home east of Turner, Wm. SCHILLINGS, 
an ex-confederate and a brave-hearted, industrious, cheerful, and religious man. He leaves a 
delicate wife, an invalid daughter, and two small children to mourn an irreparable loss. May 
they find in Jesus, a safe retreat, "a shelter in the time of storm". They have the deep 
sympathy and friendly offices of their many friends.

Turner Paragraphs - Mrs. Wm. SCHILLINGS, whose husband was burried[sic] only a few days ago
died on the 20th ult., and was buried at the Cypress Grove burying ground with her husband. 
Thus the shadows of sorrow again enshroud this unhappy home. May the Holy spirit truly comfort 
the bereft motherless and fatherless children.

Thos. SCOTT. Lura was a very bright child for her age, and we, together with her many friends, 
lament her untimely death, but our great consolation is that our temporary loss is her eternal

the 22 inst. and was buried at Shady Grove on Monday.

From Monroe Station- Mrs. SKINNER, wife of T.H.A. Skinner died at her home February 26th of
pneumonia. She leaves a husband, four daughters, and one son to mourn her loss.

Local/Brinkley - Died: Mrs. Mat SMITH on Tuesday after a prolonged illness. The funeral
yesterday afternoon was attended by many sorrowing friends. The deceased leaves a husband and 
several small children to mourn her loss.

Local/Brinkley  Died: on Monday morning at his home in Dark Corner, Joeberta T. SONTH died
after a short illness. He was one of the very first settlers in that country, and was well
thought of by very near everyone. He was a member of the Baptist church. He leaves a wife and
large family of children to mourn his death.

August 4, 1898 Local/Brinkley - Mrs. THOMAS, wife of Judge J.S. Thomas, died at her home in Clarendon on Saturday morning last. She was buried at Shady Grove Cemetery on Sunday, a large number of friends being in attendance at the funeral. Our sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved ones in their sad loss.

Local/Brinkley - It is with great regret that the writer learns of the death of his old friend,
Fred THOME, who as manager of the Smith Plantation. Fred, a splendid German character, was
well liked by everyone. He possessed a big heart and was always a gentleman. Peace to his ashes.

Blackton Blinkings - Sam THOMPSON died of consumption on last Saturday at his home near
Blackton. He was in his 62nd year and had been a resident of this vicinity for about 27 years. 
His remains were taken to Coffee Creek for internment.

Local/Brinkley Sad death - On Monday morning afternoon last, H.O. TROTTER, better known as
"kid", after a several weeks illness, passed away. The little cripple, tho' he fell short of 
the standard of perfection, possessed a large, tender heart, and it was the pleasure of the 
writer to know this fact. With sadness we chronicle his death and extend to his bereaved rela-
tives our most sincere sympathy. His remains were taken to Indian Bay for internment Tuesday 
morning.

DIED-The death of Mrs. John M.ZANONE on Friday December 31 was the saddest thing that
occurred in Brinkley during the holidays.  She leaves a loving husband and three children, 
Marie age five, Eugene age 2 1/2, and infant Clyde, to mourn her death.  The deceased, always
bright and cheerful until a few months ago a perfect picture of fine health, was loved by a 
host of friends, the writer among the number, and it is with a sadness of heart that we extend 
to the bereaved ones heartfelt sympathy in this their terrible loss. The funeral from the 
Catholic Church.  Father A. Demurger officiating. Saturday was largely attended by sorrowing 
friends.
