my Design Philosophy

The study and analysis of design has been indispensable for me to develop and refine a strong design philosophy. The thought of throwing ideas at a design in the hope that something might stick is out of the question. Time and productivity is wasted with this approach.

A principle of mine is that design should be neither decorative, nor cluttered with unnecessary and distracting elements. It is important to spend enough time on concept development. I draw many sketches and ask myself one question; "are these design elements really necessary to convey the intended message?"

I have concluded that a message can have a louder and clearer voice through the elimination of the extraneous. I draw inspiration for this minimalist design approach from modern furniture design and modern architecture.

Brett Weston, a famous photographer, once said, “if you can’t see an image, you’re not close enough.” My photograph, “A Bowl and Table + Sunlight,” follows this dictum. I try to apply this idea to graphic design by showing only what is necessary, thus making my designs stronger and more focused.
