Taken from "History of Washington County"
J.J. Hollister, A.R. Darrow, and R.R. Harte, were appointed a committee to devise a plan for the erection of the monument, to report at a future meeting.
So in september 20th,1874 the contract was given to Thomas O'Hara of Cincinnati, Ohio at a cost of $4,550, and was to be completed in 6 months.
A Cincinnati Journal said of the work: "The sculptior has wisely refrained from an attempt to create in marble any ideal type of soldierly manhood; he has only striven to represent the young farmer=soldier, sun=browned and vigorous from healthy labor in the field, inbused with the natural heroisum inherited by the descendants of a race of hunter, and sternly calm in the firm consciouness of duty.
it goes on to say: We have no fancy warrior in this memorial statue, but only the image of a fair=haired country youth of rugged face and form, like hundreds that left their homes to die for the Union.
it was dedicated September 17,1875 at 10:00 A.M.
Note: if you have a copy of "History of Washington Cty" it is worth reading, espically since the 4th of July is upon us again, different war but never the less no war is good, and we have had many.
God Bless America and for all who made it great.

PARKE Research
Debbie (Noland) Nitsche
Diamonddeb@comcast.net
Tuesday June 15, 2004 14:33:27
As alot of you all know, I have been doing the surname of PARKE/PARK/PARKS research for years. My gg grandmother, Francis Eliza Mankins' maiden name was PARK. Daughter of William Mason Park(e) and Mary McNeal. William's father was Salmon Parke and Sophronia Mason. Salmon and Sophronia left Washington Co. before 1850, and settled in Scotland Co., Missouri. This was when their children were little. Some of their children returned to Washington Co., Ohio and others remained out west. Here is the timeline of residence of Salmon and Sophronia.
Some time before 1850 and until at least 1865 the family lived to Scotland Co., Missouri.
1865 Sophronia died in Scotland Co., Missouri (is buried there). Sometime between 1865 & 1870 Salmon remarried to a Lavina Dearing, widow of Clemment Dearing. She is from Clark County, Missouri. Her daugher, also named Lavina was Robert Judson Parke's 1st out of 4 wives. They married in 1865.
Salmon and Sophronia's son William and wife Mary McNeal also lived in Scotland Co., Missouri. In 1860 they were in Villiage Township, Van Buren, Iowa. They came back to Washington Co., Ohio about the year of 1866, the year that their youngest son, Jonas Aldelphia was born. (He was 4 yrs. old in the 1870 census, born in Ohio)
1870 Salmon and Lavina were living in Rock Creek, Clackamas Co., Oregon. Lavina died between 1870-1880.
1880 Salmon was living with his son Robert Judson Parke in Spokane Prairie, Kootenai, IDAHO.
1888 Salmon died in Pullman,Whittman Co., Washington. Some of Salmon's children has been known to have lived in the following Washington state counties: Whittman, Walla Walla, and Columbia. All these counties surround Whittman Co.
Below is a LINK to where you can view PLAT maps of people who lived in Scotland Co., Missouri. I'm sure if the PARKE family removed there from Washington Co., Ohio, there MAY be others who left Wash. Co, and migrated there as well.
1858 SCOTLAND COUNTY, MISSOURI PLAT MAPS. These maps list all the land tracts outside of the towns and the owners as shown by the Scotland County Real Estate Records in 1858.
Map# 4 Township Range: T67R10 Section: 25 Surname: PARKE Given Name: SOLOMON Acres: 157.05

AN EARLY WEDDING IN WOOD COUNTY, VIRGINIA
Debbie (Noland) Nitsche
Diamonddeb@comcast.net
Thursday June 17, 2004 04:53:22
AN EARLY WEDDING IN WOOD COUNTY, VIRGINIA Joseph WOOD of Marietta, formerly a young man of New Jersey, who joined a company of surveyors planning to survey the lands northwest of the Ohio river and south of the western boundary of Pennsylvania, was the bridegroom in an early wedding in Wood county, Virginia. He was a member of a party that settled at Belleville and established a permanent settlement and was acting in the position of agent for the firm of Tilton, Gibbs & company of Pittsburg, landholders in western Virginia, when he came here. His marriage to Miss Margaret PEWTHEWER, a Scotch lady and a daughter of James PEWTHEWER, one of the first emigrants to Belleville settlement, occurred in the summer of 1790. Owing to the fact that no person in that settlement was authorized to solemnize the rites of matrimony, they went to “Farmer’s Castle,” in Belpre, where the marriage ceremony was performed by Gen. Benjamin TUPPER, a magistrate of Ohio. In 1791 the couple moved to Marietta.
Mr. WOOD died there at the age of 93 in 1851, having filled with credit and distinction many important offices. His daughter, Miss Agnes, later resided in the homestead place in that city.
Extracted by Debbie (Noland) Nitsche June 2004 Surnames were capatilized for easy indentification.
---This article was found, cut from an old newspaper that was inside an old Bible that once belonged to my father. The name of the newspaper and date that it was written is unknown. At the top of the article, someone penciled in the date “June 1901”. I don’t know if this is the date of the article or not. It could possibly be from an old Parkersburg, WV newspaper. I don’t know why my father had this article in his possession. It could of belonged to my mother before she passed away, or even one of my grandparents. I’m not aware of any one mentioned in the article is in my family history. But it must of had some meaning to the person who put it there. Maybe someday, I’ll know.

I will try to check my emails periodally while I am gone, but will not have the time to reply to any. If any of my emails come back to you, it is because my mailbox is full. Hopefully this won't happen, but just in case it does, you'll know why.

Since I first started doing this monthly Newsletter in November 2003, it has grown to 159 subscribers. Most people who subscribe live in the US, but there are a couple of people that live in other countries and have a few subscribers that are in the military overseas, that have roots in Washington Co. I am amazed and shocked to see how it has grown in just 8 months.
If anyone has anything they would like to submit to the Newsletter, such as articles, obituaries, family reunions, favorite links, family stories, old time recipes, or anything of a historical or genealogy nature that pretains to Washington County, click the link below. Then click on WRITE A NEWSLETTER ARTICLE.
All newsletters are published at the end of each month.
Thanks to those who submit articles, those who subscribe, and to those who read them.
If anyone has any comments or suggestions on how to make this newsletter better, please email me. I'm always looking for new ideas. :o)
